Awesome news... makes up for all the years of struggling with slow internet (before I could get fibre). Sheesh, I remember the days of having to drive to my parents' house with my big clunky desktop to use their dial up to install and activate Half-Life 2... :giggle:

This doubling of speed will be interesting as it will likely make other FNO's do the same.
I suspect the 500Mbs & 1Gbs options need made a price rethink and with the Equiano and 2Africa cables coming there may be some savings on offer.

With the last increase I went from 100Mbps to 200Mbps.
Lasted for a while at 200Mbps and was great.

The line is part of the work-from-home package and company funded.
Unfortunately some bean counter at work noticed that they could save some money and requested a downgrade back to 100Mbps to match the contract

You lucky to have multiple FNO's servicing your area.
We only have MetroFibre.

We also have good WISP and LTE/5G coverage from all networks which help keeps MetroFibre honest.

MetroFibre was installed March 2020, just in time Covid-19 lockdown, and has worked well so far.
Only major issues has been cable damage by JHB Water/Cable thieves thinking it was copper.

Yeah the Metro 1000/250 isn't as competitive as the Vuma offering which is a real shame but I guess we moving in the right direction.

Check that post. What I've learned is that if the ISP has a rep on this forum, it will probably be better altogether. That means you have a choice between Cool Ideas, Afrihost and WebSquad :)

Yeah it is nice having a choice but when MFN installed, it took them 6+ months to go live whereas Openserve installed and went live within a month. Not to mention the price difference between them, as I could get a 500mb for the price of MFN's 200mb through Afrihost at the time.

Same boat as you. Currently, on OS 500, might actually do a Metro install (as I have a TP, but nothing else)
Metro rolled out in our area, OS woke up, started rolling out as well and went live sooner and was way cheaper (before these announcements)

Note that the special price "applies to the month and for 2 months after" - then reverts back to regular price.
Always read the small print and T&C

Likewise with WebAfrica, WebAfrica Helper , do you have an idea of when the speeds and new pricing will rollout to its customers?

@WebAfrica Helper You didn't mention him properly.

Not really worth it to go from OpenServe to Metro for R50 (500 Mbps), unless you need that upload. Openserve is super stable. Think I'll stick with them for now.

1 Gbps is within reach, but a little pricey.

Side note: When can I get my free 500 Mbps -> 1 Gbps OS upgrade?

Yeah the 1Gbps is a bit expensive but lucky I get staff discount so only about R1000 for 1Gbps for me. I can work with that. :p

No 1Gbps yet on the ordering portal even though they are alluding to it all over.
