Can't say I was particularly fond of Arthur. His un-athletic figure doesn't inspire much confidence in his coaching ability (yes, I know that his past good results speak for themselves though).

Now, regarding the discussion about Smith. When Smith was injured in Australia for the ODi series, Botha was assigned captain duty. If he is injured during a test series, someone else will have to be assigned that role. Yes, I definitely think that he is a brilliant cricketer, but not so much a captain. Now, before anyone starts with the "who are we going to replace him with?" nonsense, I don't see any reason why the selectors can't TRY someone else, as we have nothing else much to lose.

If he is injured or drops dead SOMEONE else HAS to replace him. One man alone can never ever be the be-all and end-all of South African cricket.

Just heard on Cape Talk with an interview with Neil Manthorp. That its not because of a feud between Smith and Arthur but because of the usual cr@p that blights South African sport - the Quota issue.

Apparently Arthur got sick and tired of being harrassed by the powers that be and decided he had enough and decided to quit.

Cricinfo says it was a combination of that and pressure due to the poor performance of the side in 2009.

Grimspoon's comments defy nature. Smith would have to be making double centuries everytime he makes a big score. and it's not like he has a whole lot of not outs to hide behind.

imho get an internal coach, a foreign coach brings a foreign game. Hopefully smith's days as captain is numbered.

Just heard that the entire team selection board has been given the boot too - due to not transforming the sport. I saw this coming when Ntini was left out of the remaining test matches. No wonder he never resigned but, instead, vowed to get back into the side. Must have had inside information. It seems Smith has been used as a scapegoat by the media in SA only. The international media see it differently. (I tend to follow international media rather than local for obvious reasons) The truth according to them is that Arthur's decission was a result of pressure from a higher source.

yeah. manthorpe basically said that although smith and arthur were bickering because of their current poor form, it wasn't the reason he stepped down at all. he was pretty adamant.
it's always much easier for csa to window dress than answer the real question of why quality players of colour aren't coming through and what they should be doing better in schools.
maybe they see it a 'both-and' situation of having to resolve the colour issue at the top and the bottom.

When are you guys going to get over the 'colour' thing.

A fast bowler doesn't get dropped...its quota...
a fast bowler does get dropped...it so that 'we can't be accused of preferential treatment'...
a fast bowler vows to get back in team....its because he knows about the 'quota' thing.

Why are things never the way they actually are or should be? Why can Brett Lee or Stuart Clark vow to get back in team...but not Ntini?

...and btw...the Aussies don't think Smith is a 'arrogant Captain' nor a bad captain...not when he out-captained them here in Aus last year...perhaps its time you guys shared the view..

and also perhaps its time that you guys gave that same sort of respect to Waugh, Warne, Ponting et al that the Aussies give to Smith etc

And Grimspoon perhaps you shouldn't go watch any more of Smith's innings' so that his average can go up further...you clearly are 'gal'

There has never been a quota problem in cricket and i doubt there ever will be.How many people of colour have been regulars in the national team that did not deserve to be there?

lol, how did I know someone was going to pull the stats.

Every time I get into discussions about how I feel he is a useless batsman, people go on about his stats.

Why is it then every time I watch a SA match he sucks.

You should watch more than one game a year ;)

Thank you! Finally someone sees this. Quotas is not the reason the team is doing so bad, coz it doesn't exist. When a player of colour fails in one game(in most cases) they get the boot.

I tend to agree. And to add to that, I dont think a top batsman(or bowler) should be captain. It has hardly ever worked, except in Australia's case?

Who ever said they were? Ntini was kept in the team for one to many tests not because of skin colour but because of experience and loyalty.

People wanting to see racists behind every bush and tree are worse than rasists themselves.
