Mickey Arthur resigns as SA coach

Now that you guys mention Warne as our coach, I think its a wonderful idea.

Would love to call him a choker.

Smith is a great opening batsman and we can't afford to lose him. He's just never convinced me as a captain and he is too headstrong.

Personally I have never liked smith not to mention I think he is a crap batsman, 90% of the time he is out for less than 20 runs.

The guy has a batting average of 50.89 in 81 tests. You really can't ask for more from your opening batsman. This figure would have been much better if not for the lean period he experienced two or three tests back.

So which test player prior to 90's would you pick as coach?

You are basically limited to the team that played in late 60's...eg Richards, bacher, Pollocks, Proctor et al...probably Richards is only one vguely interested, but the problem is that coaching today has moved towards facilitating the analysis rather than actual test experience of 40 yrs ago...nd test cricket only played against NZ, Eng and Aus (only countries that defied 1960 ban)

...or are you talking about those that played domestic cricket in the isolation period? Who exactly...that devisive Clive Rice.

Lets move into the modern era without questioning the politics...there are many suitably qualified modern technicians who would fit the bill...don't take a step backward by dredging up old names and/or conservative players such as Jennings and Kepler resp.

What I was meaning with my comment was that some of these older players should be specialist coaches (e.g. batting/bowling/fielding) rather than the head-coach. Yes, I agree (as you point out) that some of these players would not be interested but surely it's in the interest of Cricket SA to retain/incentivise these star players to share their experience & skill. Obviously these days, there are players who can share their skill who played in the post-1994 era - Rhodes, Pollock, Donald etc... but it's also disturbing that they have been largely relegated to TV commentary. Yes Rhodes was I think the fielding coach at one stage but I can't believe realistically that they are all not interested in playing a pivotal role in SA's cricketing future.

Out of interest - what did Kirsten do before coaching India? Was he involved in CSA's set-up? I only know he owned a restaurant in Cape Town but that's about it :p

On the Smith issue:

He can't be dropped. He is too good a batsmen. He's probably arrogant because of the school he went to... :p (St. Stithians)

must be a big score the other 10% for him to able to average 50.89 in tests and 40.67 in odi's ?????

Gary was the high performance guy, the same role corrie van zyl now has. Jonty was fielding coach for a while but his standard bank and ipl contract is worth a lot more.

I am a Smith hater too. But that figure is just wrong, it is 34% of his test innings.

ID Rat. Name Nat.
1 881 G. Gambhir IND
2 843 G.C. Smith SA
3 836 D.P.M.D. Jayawardena SL
4 835 K.C. Sangakkara SL
5 805 M.J. Clarke AUS
6 799 V. Sehwag IND
7 783 R.T. Ponting AUS
8 773 J.H. Kallis SA
9 765 S. Chanderpaul WI
10 763 R.L. Taylor NZ

Then i don't want to know how much the rest of the test players fail in their innings's

jeez, everyone know GS is arrogant <inser whatever you want here> but i don't think its fair to call him a bad player, or 'he fails 30-90% of the time'

If you honestly think that, you know less about cricket than Malema knows about making furniture....

Well at least that is positive. Unfortunately one can't do anything about the money situation :(

lol, how did I know someone was going to pull the stats.

Every time I get into discussions about how I feel he is a useless batsman, people go on about his stats.

Why is it then every time I watch a SA match he sucks.

What? People are suggesting, or wanting, Warne or Waugh to coach SA!?! If CSA went this route they would need to realise that they would have the majority of the South African public in uproar and threatening not to support the team. Even with success these two would find it difficult to get support from the public at large.

Even more humorous that you find it strange that people pull out stats when you randomly state that a player is poor! Surely the stats are more accurate than your perceptions...

So you have watched one cricket match in which Smith scored no runs and you then decided he was a poor player?

This is a profesional era. We need the best guys that can get the job done. Whether they be sa,aussie, english or whatever. If warne or waught got SA to win the wc 2011, any ill feeling would be forgotten in a heartbeat.

You are exactly right, this is a professional era where crowd and public support is a necessity. Public relations is as important as the actual job at hand. Hiring one of those two would be a public relations nightmare. As stated success would calm these feelings a tad but this would still mean having to give credit to two despised players.

They could fulfill a support/consultant role like Eddie Jones did in the rugby.

i also don't understand this

has he also noticed that when Smith gets to 100 in the 4th innings, we've never lost a test ????

has he noticed that Smith is the #2 batsman in the world right now???

Grim, i'm very close to calling you an idiot....

I'm not too disappointed as I never though much of him as a coach. And to be honest 5 years really is a long time for a cricket coach.

Good grief top 5 of stupid comments ever.

I think I might be closer

lol chaps, calm down before you blow a valve.

I am just saying that I never manage to watch the games where he plays like the worlds #2. I always seem to see him go for nothing more than a few runs.

Sorry if I upset the fans, it is just my personal opinion about the guy :)
