Microsoft and Apple rivalry heats up

Physical Non-VM Mac Server

Feee upgrades for life.
Why spend R18K once off?
Why make excuses and complain if you can save and use a kck ass monitor or two. Great keyboard and mouse etc?

The accessories won't even cost near the Apple fee.

That’s $6336 dollars over 3 years.

A MacBook up specced with external mouse/trackpad and keyboard is less than a third of that.

Your math doesn’t make sense and is a far inferior experience.

This kind of setup only works for those who cannot or will not go Mac native but need to dev some iOS/MacOS apps, doesn’t make sense for anything else.

Also nobody make excuses or complained. You were the only one doing that.

****

Even the fancier plan I only saw now levels out to the cost of buying one and still suffers from the remote experience so why would anyone do that? It doesn’t make sense on any level at scale.

Only time it would make sense if you needed to run like one or two Mac instances in an otherwise non-Mac environment.

Because you can use that money better, like a subsidised BYOD policy.

Half the people including myself would promptly resign if we ever tried that.

Also why would I ever RDP to anything if not using Windows?

One of the perks we have is that you get a brand new machine the day you start with us. When you leave you can buy it for whatever the remaining depreciation period is left otherwise at the 3 year age mark you can purchase it for next to nothing.

It’s a great way to get people to look after their stuff and it’s of course also a tax write off which isn’t possible in the cloud.

As above it’s also soul destroying. We try to allow users to use their machine freely as if their own, within reasonable parameters of course, so they can be as productive as possible without stupid corporate bullshit.

As long as you aren’t doing anything illegal you can pretty much do what you want on your machine as long as you get the job done.

Your link pointed nowhere FYI.
More like a case of a silver spoon it seems.

If you decide to resign because the company decides on different tech, then you are spoiled. Corporate bullsht pays your salary by the way.

It's cheaper. $25 per month.
My link pointed to my post, which pointed to the cloud service.

Yes spoiled in not working for a silly corporate environment that would make my day to day miserable.

If your life is made a struggle to get your work done that’s not being productive.

I thought you meant the link in the previous post you made which came back to this thread.

But I’m confused now. Are you really objecting to spending 18k on a machine? Which is next to nothing?

Please tell me you aren’t rolling out nasty cheap plastic pieces of crap to developers?

My previous company gave us nasty plastic pieces of HP crap that still cost more than my MacBook does now somehow.

If your reality is paying less than that I can only think you work for a tiny fly by night or you are bleeding staff at a phenomenal rate.

An enterprise corporate isn’t going to even blink at 20k for a laptop. It’s literally nothing on capex.

*****

Real devs couldn’t use that restricted $25 plan even if they tried to force themselves.

Even going with that plan and your calculation you still need ANOTHER machine to connect to that.

Unless that’s a R6,000 piece of crap you aren’t really winning.

Ignoring the pain in the ass of remote and latency and internet failure etc.

If anything you’ve proven that a MacBook Air and even a Pro is a spectacularly good deal.

The logic is terrible it because the OS irrelevant, the cost benefits would apply to any OS.
In theory sure, in practice it would never work.

My work is irrelevant. You spoke about yours and I commented on your posts.

So you pay R18K for a new Macbook. Which, as you've confessed is used for 80% of developers and development tasks.

You do this every 3 years?
But it's fine, because they can "afford" it?
Does money grow on trees?

Or. An alternative. Pay about R12.5K (even less if a deal is struck with the provider) every 3 years. Which gives you the latest software, dev tools and Apple Server infrastructure?

Yet you complain of a HD, full screen, can't tell the fkn difference Cloud solution?

Show me a provider offering Apple Silicon VM solutions, also what is Apple Server infrastructure?

This debate is literally, "I don't like Apple because I don't like Apple and I would never use an Apple because I don't like Apple, because I don't like Apple."

For too many subjective objections for this to ever move forward into an actual debate of product vs product.

Yet you complain of a HD, full screen, can't tell the fkn difference Cloud solution?

You are becoming incomprehensible now.

Those complaints were exactly why I would spend the money for the MacBook because the posted machine was far inferior with a low res screen and a terrible user experience.

The 12k one you are punting will be even worse.

I’m honestly not understanding your point any more.

I’m not a bean counter but I’m sure the financials make sense for taxes etc.

But what I do know it’s an excellent work environment and pleases and retains staff.

Not everything is about base cost. It’s about everything working together and coherently.

Nobody, absolutely NOBODY wants to work on a remote system all day. Not even a local one in the same building.

And if you tell you me can’t tell the difference you are being utterly delusional and I can only think you’ve never actually tried to work on a setup like this. I have, it’s literally a last resort.

We always have the latest dev tools and infrastructure either which way, our MacBooks don’t change that.

Did you even take the time to open the link? I'd rather not waste my time. Read.
It's a Server. Physical Server. Not a VM.

Okay from where exactly lol
Apple doesn’t cater to the server market just like gamers…

Yup even thin clients on a local network is a horrendous experience.

It’s literally only there as an option for the most ridiculous can’t operate otherwise cost saving exercise.

And even so it’s irrelevant to the equation.

99% of your daily workflow is your direct experience between your screen and the size and quality there of and the mouse/trackpad and keyboard interface to that screen.

If anything hinders that in any way not only does it suck badly but it slows everything down. Remote connections by their very nature so all of that at incredibly bad resolution on top of it all.

Why would anyone opt for a remote work experience on a piece of crap screen and machine over a native high dpi retina experience with perfect colour and beautiful and snappy keyboard and mouse interface for basically the same money?

How are developers going to access this magical cloud infrastructure? Through their own devices...or do you have to provide that as well? So now you (as a company) have to pay and maintain two services...instead of just buying me a laptop? Corporates also most likely don't pay 18k for an MBA because of 'deals'...at my place of work they get them for around 14.5k
