My guess then is that the cheapest surface tablet will be between R6K - R7K after all the distributors and channels and whatnots put their markup on it.

Absolutely, with all those mechanical and moving parts in the thing, I'd fear total loss on the slightest bump.The proof is in the drop test. A much more likely real world scenario than needing a tablet to double as a skateboard.
