Mid-range 4x4 options

not the most practical? Thats a bit of an understatement for the FJ.

FJ!! <3
Its probably not the most practical car and a little thirsty but I love those things.

Love the FJ, but too thirsty. Would be nice with a 3L turbo diesel but then again the South African FJ market share is too small in the global context to justify the change, it's for countries where the price of fuel isn't really an issue.

Try the Santa Fe. The 2013/14 model has loads of space and is quite capable off-road (not rocks) despite its 185mm ground clearance.
Has heaps of power from a 2.2L turbo diesel (145KW/440NM). Went on a 1400KM road trip with many winding roads and averaged 7.3L per 100km loaded with 4 adults and all their kit for a week long trip. Also took it out on the Atlantis dunes the other day, and it never got bogged down once, and did all the obstacles the Foresters were battling with effortlessly. They are a bit pricey new (although worth every cent), but I would go for a good second hand one. Although the elite and executive have equal off-road prowess, the elite is just a pure delight on the eyes with the 19 inch rims and panoramic sunroof.
