Mobile data bundle costs: MTN versus Vodacom versus Cell C

Is it just me or do I understand this wrong? They slash the OOB rate, but the in-bundle rate remains the same so what's the use if you always make sure that you remain in-bundle.

It would have made sense to me if they had told me that the in-bundle rate had been dropped from R0.19 to say R0.09 then I would have been jumping up and down with joy.

Someone please enlighten me if I am getting this wrong.

Dude u r absolutely right!!

These guys throw a peice of bread to the customers and make Big headings.

I don't know if I can see them doing too much to drop data rates until after the World Cup is done, since it's much cheaper to just keep your "cheap" customers usage down rather than build new ones for all those wonderful rich roaming people connected to Vodacom's high-speed-but-empty towers.

I do think they need to get their rates back to something remotely competitive. Maybe something like R389 for 5GB data.

Compared to some other 'first world' countries, SA has actually very good and comparatively cheap 3G offers. I've been using 3G for years now as an alternative to ADSL. it worked well, and yes per Gig pricing is very high, but for my use i could not get a better speed/total cost offer. That said, i've now also ordered an ADSL line so my 3G usage will evaporate and the current pricing is no longer worth the benefit.
So it's not a matter of if vodacom/mtn will drop prices, but when, if they want people to use mobile broadband

anybody operating OOB should have their minds read! I suppose MTNs new prices lower the cost of stupidity.

Best thing about VC bundles is that they last until the end of the next month, so I buy 2 month's worth every second month. Works out much cheaper.

An analysis of MTN's new rates makes interesting reading:

100MB @ R80: in-bundle: 80c/mb... out-of-bundle: 65c/mb
500MB @ R189: in-bunble: 37.8c/mb... out-of-bundle: 38c/mb
1GB @ R289: in-bunble: 28.2c/mb... out-of-bundle: 29c/mb
2GB @ R389: in-bunble: 18.9c/mb... out-of-bundle: 19c/mb

So realistically OOB and IB rates are the same... but what I don't understand is the 100mb option... it's cheaper out-of-bundle that in bundle... that can't be right??... not that they care... but yes it a huge load cheaper than VodaDom... what about pre-paid customers, as this is a contract only thing!

Can I used my Vodacom 3G USB device on the MTN network?

Has Vodacom EVER taken the lead in lowering data rates? Not as far as I remember...

It's about time they started reducing out of bundle prices. Hopefully Vodacom and Cell C will follow suit.

Let's give MTN some credit! They have set a base for future data services cost reductions and if Vodacom is listening, it is also heading in the same direction. With Cell C and Telkom coming on board, the future for data bundle price cuts are on the cards.

I would think Vodacom would be ahead of the rest. But after looking at the prices. MTN out-of-bd rate just takes the lead:wtf:

Those paying OOB rates till now are probably so few, MTN is probably not giving anything away.

MTN Basic Data Rate

I'm on MTN Pay As You Go - One Rate, and I occasional surf the web on my cell phone.
I've NOT loaded a bundle as it expires before I've used the bundle up.

MTN refer to the basic data rate in there terms and conditions, but the cost is not given.
"When no data bundle is loaded, the Basic data rate will be applicable."
http://www.mtn.co.za/Support/Legal/TermsAndConditions/Pages/BasicDataTariffDataBundles.aspx

Does anyone know what the "MTN Basic Data Rate" (Rand/MB) is?

Thanks.
