Mobile data speeds get crushed by load-shedding

If load shedding is crushing mobile internet then what is it doing to fibre internet which gets installed with a router from the ISP that doesn't work on battery but rather direct power. I actually don't even know if fiber would work without power. That is why mobile is a nice backup.

MTN and Telkom are the worst hit in my case. Funnily enough, Telkom used to be the stellar performer but not these days.

Vodacom is way better than both, almost seems unaffected.

Yeah, Vodacom never went down so far in my experience.

My fibre has worked with power failures, even right through a 17 hour one
 
Who cares about speeds during LS, basic connectivity is more important
 
I think that VOIP I'll need to get a VOIP phone for emergencies

Gizzu UPS. R800 and sorted for home router 6 hours of power
Fibre uses minimal power for providers and they keep it up easily because of this.
Openserve for me has not gone down once during load shedding.

Heh? Fibre is literally a non-issue during Load Shedding and even some DSL.

Just requires a small and cheap Mini-UPS to replace the original power adaptor and you are good for hours on end.

How do you think people have been WFH through Load Shedding for two years?

Lol Just went through 15 hour breakdown followed by 2 hours of loadshedding and my fibre was fine through out.

FNO's have some pretty strong backup infrastructure

MTN better retract their ads about how much lagging fibre gets. MTN does not even start during load shedding

FNO's have some pretty strong backup infrastructure

The GPON networking equipment still needs power on the FNO side, which usually involves a street cabinet for every few blocks. But they use a lot less power than a cellphone tower

A single rackmount solar battery and inverter can usually keep a few blocks of fiber going for a day or more. A Cellphone tower will need as much as 10x that amount. I suspect that the cellphone providers run their towers at minimal power in many areas to save money on batteries. The areas that don't typically have the lower performance are the towers in secure areas backed by large diesel generators
 
When load shedding kicks in, the towers runs on batteries, and then at some point, it will switch over to lower energy usage, the term is LVD (Low Voltage Disconnect), meaning that the systems will be disconnected gradually, in order to prolong battery-life during load-shedding....
 
When we get loadshed MTN is dead.

This is Telkom LTE. Hasnt skipped a beat for years.

One would think speeds would increase on mobile during loadshedding as there is less congestion on the tower or is everyone streaming on their phone because their TV isn't working?
