So, I had to pay an additional R1700 for the 4 meter HDMI cable over and above the R5999 for the LG 32 inch full HD LCD Screen.

Did I get ripped off on the cable? Why are these things so damn expensive? :wtf:

You gots royally ripped off unfortunately dude...

Monster cables are WAY overrated...Maximum you should pay is a few hundred bucks.

If you need it urgently, I'm sure Game or Makro will have some cheapies.

R1,700 is extortion dude..

OK, thanks. Ja, there is a Game right next door to Hi-Fi corp. Funny thing is, all their cables were hellishly expesnive, even the short ones.

take2 and hdcabling are mostly probably the best places to buy HDMI cables from but they're most probably closed for the holidays...meh

Otherwise Game/Makro is your best bet..

HDMI is a digital signalling technology. So you won't get any degradation of picture quality with cheaper cables like you can with analogue connections (composite/component/svideo). However if the cable is too cheap and there is too much loss on the cable then the tv won't be able to decode the picture correctly and you will see compression artefacts such tearing and blocks and stuff like when it rains really hard with dstv. You will know if your cable doesn't work very quickly.

If you do a search on google you will see that monster cable uses shady marketing overseas where they have stands with identicle HD equipment showing the differences between "other" cables and monster hdmi cables. The "other" cables are actually composite cables so it is in SD while the monster cable setup is in HD.

The HDMI standard has a built in error correction and has an error tolerance of 1 pixel in every billion so it's not likely that you'll ever see a difference like that..

The things is, places like HiFi Corp have owners who start out driving one car. As they sell more overpriced HDMI cables and the TV's that go with them, they get richer. They start buying more. Even boats and planes. And then when the s*#t hits the fan, and all those repayments are not supported by the base income of their shop, they start charging R600 for a R150 cable.

Monster Cables are expensive, as you can see here. So HiFi Corp was not ripping you off... Monster was. The problem with HiFi Corp is that they made you think that it was your only option.

But being a member of MyBB we expect forumites to be more informed and do research before dropping that much cash on a cable. Shame on you Gary.. :D
