More black staff, or else...

I know a lot of you are youngsters so you may not be aware of this. In the 70's many companies/unions had rules that prevented them from retrenching staff or firing them for incompetence. 99% of the employees of the company I worked for were white and we had a large number of incompetent white people, the same was true in Government departments. They were dead wood and we could not get rid of them.I will say this again, yes the current government have made mistakes but they also do good. Dealing with the receiver of revenue used to be a nightmare(apartheid days), now they are world class. We have the best Minister of Finance the country as ever had. I can honestly state that I would rather live under this incompetent government than under the old incompetent apartheid government.

No thanks - I will take the Nats back.

ROFL - of course SARS is good - its a source of funds for the rest of our corrupt government. They can't just rely on bribes

As much as I'm fed up with the current gov's bullshyte, Nats are really not the answer.

@Toffee: Pride should come from the way a government *spends* the taxes, not how efficiently they collect/extort them.

I was presented with a choice of those two in the post I quoted. Nats vs ANC.

And I would take the Nats over the ANC any bloody day of the week.

One or two valid comments, but unfortunately there well thought comments are undone by the prejudiced ramblings of others. I had to struggle to get through some of the comments because they were absolute nonsense. Some people need to get out and meet others off all races. I work with very competent people of all races, so to genaralise about the "superiority" of whites is ignorant. Rather make balanced well thought out comments, and people like myself will take the time to read and contemplate them, not just to dismiss them offhand as the ramblings of a prejudiced individual. This could/would lead to us learning from each other!

Very reason I said experienced long term employee, and lets be honest, because of apartheid the older white population has more experience than most that would benefit from BEE. A case and point is Eskom. But as far as I see business, the colour is green. If you can make the company lots of money, they wont care where you are from.

I also work with competent people of all races, but thats the whole thing, they are good at what they do and they didn't need BEE or AA to help them get a job. As a matter of fact, they would be insulted if it were the case of BEE getting them the job. I've been told "I want to know I got here because they want me here, not because they required to have me here". That is how I see it too. If a company has a racist opinion, then they lose out on a good and hard worker who will go somewhere else and make that other company successful.

I followed this link from that article. It's a bit old but it's an interesting example of how things could go very wrong if left unchecked.

Pretoria - A Pretoria High Court Judge on Thursday criticised the Tshwane Municipality for putting equity transformation above safety considerations.

I say
National service (i spent 3 wasted years+ in the army)
Riots
Apartheid
Pass laws
Sanctions (sport sanctions no international rugby cricket etc..........)
Bankrupt economy
No freedom of speach (they would have banned the internet for a start)

No way I would return to a Nationalist Government-does anybody remember PW and HV

Not saying I would vote for ANC. My hope is that the ANC splits left and right, that would change SA for the good.

The problem is not with the competent ones. Of course there are competent blacks out there. Problems start when there are not *enough* competent BEE candidates to go around. However, the law says you need X black people and if you can only find (X-10) competent blacks willing to work for you then your options are pretty much limited to:
1) Hiring someone who lacks the necessary competence
2) Double the pay & steal a competitors BEE worker (i.e. job hopping)
3) Getting penalized for missing BEE quotas

Most white people feel insulted too if you tell them they gained something because of Apartheid.;)

What?! That's SHOCKING abuse and discrimination!!

Let's do it all over again... yeah, that should fix the problem...

/end ANC mentality

/the oppressed become the oppressors

I currently work outside SA - and what a relieve not to have any issues regarding BEE and AA.

No insinuations that one is racist, because there are not enough ANC cronies idling inside the company. No pressure to hand half the family silver to a well connected Zuma supporter. No threats of being reported for "racial discrimination" etc etc.

One can focus on getting the job done.

I doubt it I would consider a contract in ZA unless there are guarentees that race of co-worker will not be considered a merit, and that no transfer of skills are required (ever tried to transfer skills to an untrainable?) etc. Skills will automatically be transferred to a competent junior. A competent person will observe and learn and ask and learn, and his position will grow as his capabilities grow.

not taking from Peter to give to Sipho.
Nothing to "create" jobs, but to actually get the people wêking...

Or...*gasp* the government get involved in REAL job creation... oh wait... that means they'll have to w-o-r-k.... strange concept to them.
Spelling is actually w-ê-k... :D

Look at the other countries in Africa... The days of Africa too are numbered.
So the concept of United States of Africa is on the table to further drain the shrinking SA economy

My company employs 95% black people. I think we are safe.

Just not from yourselves, as you are excluding allot of talent. Your company will just never reach the top with such discriminatory policies.

It could be argued that BEE is creating more jobs cause 3 unskilled people have to be employed to do the work of 1 skilled person...

I would rather have 1 person succeeding in doing the job than 3 people failing to do it.

If there was one success story in Africa we could justify BEE and such, but there are none. The standard is set as that of a 1st world country.

Funny thing is, a friend of mine is looking at going to Botswana or Mozambique - they are only too happy to have white farmers.

Till they can rake up enough profit for the government and when the local guys become too jealous, they'll be kicked out again.
