More Free ADSL data from Telkom?

You are setting the bar so low. The minimum we should ask for is an upgrade to a speed which allows a multi-media experience without bufferring. Tohether with that we need correspondingly large caps so that one can use it, not 24/7 but frequently, e.g. a pensioner who has an interest in a particular subject. Such hypothetical person may spent 8 hours, 6 days a week, on the internet. An affordable package accommodating this should be the minimum to aim for.
Anything else is wasting the countries (that is all of us) resources and thus impeding its development.

512 is not enough theses days has well. There is really little you can do online with a 512 line. these days you require at the very least 2mbs. They should give us uncapped after 7pm like at the vry least.

Never. Not with telkom. And the issue is that it will cost MORE to cancel the contract than to just wait it out. I have the same problem.

Honestly, I reckon we need 1Mbps minimum. I'll be more than happy with that, as long as it comes with cap increases too. I'm on 3GB 384kbps (plus whatever I buy above that from axxess), I'd be happy with 15GB 1Mbps. More would be nicer, but thats good for a start.

Aunty Telkom

I have been an ADSL subscriber with Telkom since 2005 so I'm not married to them via a contract. I have a 384 / 3Gig line & I live about 1km from the Telkom exchange. Over the years there have been no problems with reliabiltiy so that is OK. I use the 'net mainly for surfing and listening to audio streaming. Topping up at R64.76 per Gig is a bit over the top these days seeing there are other ISPs offering the service a LOT cheaper. I emailed Telkom on 30/04/2010 asking what their future plans are regarding ADSL & increasing the speed, and or bandwidith and that I'm thinking of going to another ISP. I'm waitng for a reply. I don't have a big gripe with Aunty Telkom, I just want better value now that things are more competitively priced!

Telkom should charge for the service only. The data (information) one downloads is free. It is in the public domain and doesn't belong to Telkom. So how can Telkom charge for data that is not theirs.

So ! Moggie it is now 17 June and still not a peep from Telkom. I now have two accounts one from Telkom 4 Mbits, 5GB and the other mweb, 4Mbits, uncapped.
I use the Telkom account in the first week then change to mweb. I'm waiting for Telkom to make an announcement before deciding what to do. I worry because they own the line.

Anyway, the total cost of ownership with regards to internet will never change. The costs will just shift as. Telkom makes bandwidth free, they then just charge more for line rental.

But one interesting debate about the internet in the next decade is that it will become like public roads. Access will be free to all and it will be maintained by governments. The costs associated will still exist its just they will come from taxes. 100yrs ago many roads where private toll roads until governments stepped in. You will still have private infrastructure that is not free (like toll roads) but will carry more value (faster speeds, better latency).

What is interesting is that wireless is the most likely medium to be used for this free internet. Already in parts of Cape Town and Knysna you have free public internet. Cape Town is limited to what you can access but I understand Knysna's one is less restrictive.
