I tend to agree with this thinking. NA engines are for the long term. I also tend towards the Japs since their engineering is simpler, so less failure points.

What would you suggest in a budget of R100k?

Lies man. The last (French) turbo I had only gave issues at around 200k km. And most of that was driver induced.

Opel Corsa, Mazda 2, Kia Rio, Toyota Auris, and lastly the Ford Focus. Don't be too fazed by high mileage, nothing wrong with a high mileage, clean car with full service history, the previous owner has already done most of the maintenance, stuff that usually break has been replaced and you get yourself a good car with plenty of life in it.

My first choice, even the very first generation if in a good condition, the quality of build has been deteriorating on the newer cars, even Toyota is not immune, the Quest shaped Corolla is a much better car than the one that replaced it in terms of overall quality.
 
I am selling my 2008 Golf 5 2.0 Fsi with 131,000km. It's a bigger and older car. But way more comfortable than the options you are surveying. It is an option if you are interested

Should try it from my angle ...... I miss read the question initially and saw

most comfortable used budget/midrange bitch.​

Was about say the aunty at the local sports bar :)

Anyhow ........ Given a choice of the list, I would go with the Rio.
No other reason than I drove one from Boston, via Philly into Raleigh - across to Charlotte, then down to Colombia, picked up the I95 at Savanah and eventually onto Daytona.

Then again down to the FL Keys, via the Everglades and Florida city to Key West and back to Daytona.

It did me well.

The most impressive moment though, was picking up a double bed in a box, a dining room 4 seater set, 2 side tables a lamp and 8 compartment Kallax book case all from Ikea in Orlando, fitting them into the car in pieces, out of the boxes, and driving back to Daytona ........... bits under the seat, hanging out the windows and all ....... redneck style. :)

Then again, it was a hire car, but great!!

Tried to get one this month to go up to Rio Hato from Panama City - but got given a Kia Sonet ..... lets see how she works.
 
Another option to consider is a Suzuki SX4 if it's looks don't bother you too much, it's a great car and it flies below the radar since the first thing people think about is Toyota.
