Last week I got a new dash air vent since the old on cracked up after 13 years in the sun. I paid R1k since they had to bring it in from Germany as locally they no longer keep interior bits for my old car.

That got me thinking, the car is probably worth R40k and I paid 2.5% of its value for a part. What is the most expensive part in terms of total value percentage that others buy for their cars?

I bought my car for R40k and paid R4.5k ex VAT and not including labour for a new wiring harness for the engine.

I would have to check the Kinglsey Report but guess for my i10 it would most likely be either my shocks or my windscreen. I know on the ATOS its the shocks (last quote was R7K to replace, they aren't gone but I would like to replace them but not at that price).

My missus' old car, a Golf III GTI's engine management system started giving problems. A second hand replacement unit (no new ones could be sourced) was something like R15k a couple of years ago. The car was sold recently for R45k.

In my case, was an auto gearbox for a 12 year old E36 328i.

According to BMW, the replacement would need to be imported at a cost of R30k (this was in 2005 or so). At the time the car was probably worth R45k.

Safe to say that I did not pull the trigger and managed to find someone to fix the gearbox (For R10k), after which it kept going for another 8 years until we sold the car...

My wife's BMW auto box had to be replaced. The car cost R 330k and the gearbox (itemised on the invoice) was R66k. Luckily the motorplan paid for it. Quite a ridiculous price. The agents had 3 goes at fitting it, without oil or similar leaking out of it afterwards.

It's between my Heated Front Windshield (R12500) and ABS pump (R12k).

2002 Ranger Rover 4.6 HSE Vogue (P38)

Shocks - R350
Vented brake discs-R250-350
Brake pads - R350-560 :D

Edit: Can get a non-heated windshield for R900. Heated one is only available from dealers.
Edit2: Valued at R101700

1.9TDI Polo worth 90k. Turbo and intercooler went, was quoted 43k by VW just for the turbo, got a recon turbo and did the whole job for 20k

Also, inb4 Roux saying something about VAG group :p

Just showed this to my friend who has a Renault Megane. His water pump was R 14 000

Brake pads for Golf 3 from Exclusive Auto Parts - R 130,00 whole set

I've never spent more than R500 on a single part for my Ford Fiesta '06.. :)

Consumers never look at spares prices when shopping for a new car. Some (Volvo) are astonishing whereas Ford, Nissan and GM are much better value. Plus there are many "pirate parts" available for those cars. Even a Honda air-filter is R 420,00 at the agents and R 105,00 from Masterparts

Just had a look around at those annual reports. Pretty awesome info!

That's ridiculous.... because most cars' shocks are in the region of R4-5k. My Merc's shocks, which are expensive, are R7500.

I suspect if I ever need to replace my DSG gearbox it will be the most expensive thing in the car.

Bought a '98 BMW 328i E46, M edition in manual for $6000 (NZ).
It had subframe and chassis damage, which I made worse with an incident that involved going sideways over a pavement...

Cost me $3000 to repair. Subframe replaced, chassis aligned, new chassis rail, new control arm (control arm was completely my fault though).
By some miracle the pavement incident didn't do major damage to the wheel, axle and suspension.

Got it cheap because it was a private auction, I took the risk and didn't quite get the bargain I thought. Ah well, runs like a dream now and beats anything else I could have had for the money :)
