Most expensive part on your car

Almost bought a Mercedes A class recently. Price was R57 000 on the 2003 model. Just before buying it the owner informed me that a sensor inside the automatic gearbox got replaced. And that cost a cool R22 000.

So there's one car I cannot afford. It was a great car though, still in excellent condition.
 
Labor included, the most expensive part to replace on modern cars today is the gearbox and thereafter the engine. If it is a diesel you will cringe when the clutch goes since it most likely rubs against a dual-mass flywheel that cannot be skimmed and needs to be replaced at the same time.
 
Tyres...........

Where are all the SUV guys with their all terrains which can set you back anything up to R5,000 per tyre (depending on brand) so around R20k a set.....
 
Just had a mishap with my Mazda Drifter...

Need a new engine... R25k including labour for new engine, radiator, waterpump etc.... roughly 25% of the value of the vehicle.

Tyres will be about R2500 each, so R10k for the set.

Interesting. On a automatic that could make sense, but on a manual it seems strange.
I think it was a Honda engine was recently quoted at R70k.

Considering an engine as 'a part' seems a bit extreme though.
Even a transmission is not a single component.

Not too long ago the ECU would be the most expensive part, and even those aren't always a single component anymore. I think it was a luxury car that recently got quoted somewhere in the direction of R200k to replace its 3 control boxes that got wrecked by water damage.

No ways, the engine is a hell of a lot more expensive. For example, A brand new 7G-tronic transmission costs R35k. A new engine on the other hand is closer to R80k.

As Toxicbunny said there, they cost 2700 pounds in the UK which is much more realistic.

Does sound excessive but then these Germans with their fancy cars..
 
One reason BMW parts are so expensive in SA is that you cannot get any "pirate parts" (I'm not talking about service parts) whereas even in Germany, you can get BMW parts made in Turkey that are an identical fit and cost a fraction of the agents price

Eg: Front wing for 318 - €1090 from BMW and €390 from Boristan Auto Spares in Ankara (free shipping in Europe)
 
I got quoted R18 500 to replace my Atra 1.8 CSE's engine. The car is only worth about 45k on a good day.
 
R6.5k for a Land Rover Series 3 engine.
Bought another Series 3 Land Rover for R5k :erm: (yeah, with no papers ... but it has a engine and gearbox :p)
 
So far the most expensive part replaced is the window regulator on my A4. R1500.

To have the cable rewired on the regulator is about R500.

It pays to shop around at first.
