Most expensive part on your car

Yea, quite sad really.
Had a noise some time back when starting.

Starter from stealers R8,500 (Had it services by indy for R1,500)
A/C radiator fan R10,500 (Fixed it myself with some metal bands and poprivits)
A/C Compressor clutch (R12k for the clutch and R14k for compressor and clutch as a unit) (Squirt from Q20 and all was well)

Remember, stealers only replace parts these days, no faultfinding or repairs

Looking at about R10k for tyres and R45k for new engine.
Total value now if I could find a buyer who could afford the petrol, say R150k.

Indeed. Got quoted for R16k to effectively replace the bushings on my front suspension and the one ball joint.

Honda replaces the entire assembly though, not the parts themselves.

Ordered nice aftermarket alternatives which should be around R2k and fitment is around R2k. Don't have the equipment to do it myself

Same car - alternator R19k. swapped out for a working Jazz one (same part) for under R1k. It was a blown regulator only, but unlike older cars the regulator is a custom part inside instead of a standard part outside you can replace.

Engine and gearbox aren't parts They're systems - you can replace individual components in them. Arguably, diff as well...

If your conrod decides to leave the engine... Then the engine needs to be replaced... Sometimes you can salvage the head and the sump and maybe a pump.

On a 2003 Astra valued at about 50K at the time the dealer quoted R12 000 for a new aircon compressor. I quoted around and got one for R3500. The auto electrician who did the job laughed at the quote from the dealer and says he installs the exact same system including rewiring for less than what they asked me for just the compressor.
