Motorist kills attacker

I agree with R/SGT, this guy commited murder, at the very least manslaughter (sp?).

In that rage, he shot the guy which was NO threat to him at all, before or after he got his phone.

Every time there is a situation like this, a whole bunch of ANC supporters come out of the woodwork explaining that the criminals need to eat etc. Lets turn it around. No body has any idea what the shooter has been through before this. In all likelihood, this is not his first exposure to crime. At some point, everyone snaps. And from the looks of it, this type of behaviour is going to become more widespread. People have had enough. Living in fear all of the time. Hell, my wife spent an half an hour locked with the rest of my family in my daughter's room this morning because of the constant sound of gunshots outside and I don't live in a violent area. 10 minutes after the power went off and all hell broke loose.

I dunno. I value my possession quite highly. A lot of work went into me making the money necessary to buy them. I don't think that someone should just be able to come and take it from me and then I must just sit there and do nothing..

But killing them for a cellphone?

It's the principle. It is my cellphone. You have no right to it. I have the right to defend my property. The argument is intensified for attacks on people's houses. It should serve as a deterrent as well, which is not a bad thing.

Where in that post did you see ANYTHING that has to do with criminals eating?

This sounds like the old "temporary insanity" plea you see on American cop shows. What the gunman has been through before shouldn't come into play here. If he was mentally unstable (due to stress or whatever), he shouldn't have been carrying a gun.

What happened to holding yourself to a higher morals than a the common criminal element?

I believe everything happens with circumstance. I have the moral ability to help an old lady carry her shopping to her car, or stop and help someone who's car is stuck on the side of the road. My friends all know they can call anytime and I will do whatever I can to help them out.
I also feel that there is no place for a fool with a sparkplug who nics ppl's phone off their passenger seat, in a modern society. Usually this would be left up to police and those in a leadership position to sort out. ... but I dont really need to go there do I??

Yes. No arguments there. The bloke should not have been shot for a smash and grab. My fear is that this sort of reaction is going to become more widespread and then the old story of "How can you destroy the monster without becoming the monster" comes into effect. Because the government is not doing it's job, the public are starting to "fight back" which is not a good thing.

Indeed. It would be great if we could leave this up to the government as is the case in some other countries, but it seems as if that is no longer an option.

The moral high ground must be the most ineffectual method of combating crime there is.

Works wonders for me, have yet to commit a crime that gets me in jail. Speeding fines aside that is, but I pay them quite quickly.:o

criminals kill for nothing its about timing we started shooting okes for nothing as well

...and become a criminal in the process. Whatever happened to the "good guys". Defending yourself is your right as a living being, but killing people out of frustration is just evil.

It works well for you personally but it does nothing to help the problem of crime in this country, which is getting out of hand.

biggest problem with this is that now smash and grabs will become "shoot and grabs".

Shoot him before he shoots you mentality.
