[MS Windows] Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem: software installation & other issues

Cool, I am happy now. I used a mobile connect card previously, and this USB modem is much more stable than the card.

I seriously beg to differ. I found that the Data Card is much more stable and RELIABLE than the USB Modem. The only great advantage that the USB Modem has is the speed difference. After all the problems i've seen it caused, i wouldnt get one myself.

I seriously beg to differ :) I've got every card released and my personal choice is the E220.

I've seen many laptops cook the PCMCIA cards with the slot to close to the exhaust fan. Nothing introduces unreliability as quickly as heat. Also, any PC can be a hostile environment to RF devices and a little bit of distance goes a long way.

I never knew the E220 is faster than the other cards. How do you get to this?

What "problems" are the E220's causing? Or are you still on the concurrent VMLite / VMC issue? (Which is very easy to resolve, btw.)

To each his own i guess. I prefer the E620 above all. I have a E220 given to me by the shop to work on, and i am using. And becoz i know how to prevent it giving me the problems it gives my customers, i have no problem with it :)

I think it would be much more constructive if you (as someone who works in the industry) qualifies a statement, rather than making blanket statements read by many people who does not have your knowledge.

For example, you say there is a 'speed differential'. A large number of forumites read this and take it as fact, after all 'someone who works in a Vodashop' said so. Must be true.

By all means state your ideas and experience, that's what this forum is all about. But QUALIFY any statement you made.

So please clarify the 'speed differential' statement as well as the 'E220 gives customer's problems' statement.

I agree with you 100% :). The only gripe I have about the E220, is that it is USB which of course means that one has to struggle a bit in Vista and Linux, would be much better if there was an ethernet version of the E220, but otherwise it is a great modem :).

Yeah, unfortunately the 'USB' problems are often related to the modem instead of the way USB is handles on a PC.

My E220 went in fine on my Vista system, but every piece of hardware was 'Vista' certified. Cost a bloody fortune....

Ethernet version would be cool, but price? Also, you're now pretty close to a 3G router.

As for the problems its giving... its always the same problem, not always the same cause, and not always the same solution.

Causes are the certain application that prevent the software(and Modem drivers) to be installed. Certain software that "steals" the modem after it has been installed, causing you not to connect to the internet. Sometime i get customers where i can install the drivers, but the software refuses to install, and vice verca.

At the end of the day, i do get them sorted, after they've had a few nasty words with me about Vodacom's service :)

How do I install Version 9?

As advised above to someone else above, I visited Huawei's site via the pasted link and downloaded what I believe is the E220's version 9 = e220-hostb106d04sp00c03. Now on my desktop however, there is no setup icon or otherwise associated with the file. Its properties show no .exe extension and double clicking asks me which programme I want to use to open it.

What's gone wrong, and what is the solution please?

I think TK1 downloaded the file and got this file:
e220-hostb106d04sp00c03

No extention at all. I would recommend you rename the file to e220-hostb106d04sp00c03.ZIP OR just point the windows "which programme I want to use to open it" dialogue to WINZIP, if you have that installed.

Please just make sure that when you are renaming the file that, the |Tools|-> |Folder Options| -> |View| TAB -> "Hide extentions for known file tipes" block IS Ticked, and press OK.

Otherwise just get yourself WinZip or 7-ZIP and use that to open up the file and extract the EXE file inside.
Did that work?

EDIT:
This is not E220 Version 9 by the way, this is the original Huawei software that was on the E220 in the first place. You can get the Vodafone Mobile Connect Version 9 from the Vodacom site here. Its about 76MB by the way - too big.

Has your problem been solved ???

Setup Prosedure HUAWEI Software.

Open internet explorer and go to the following link
Step 1: www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736

Step 2: Download first file “E220-HOSTB106D04SP00C03 (Normal) (7958 KB) 29-May-2007 ” ( Save file on hard drive under my documents )

Step 3: Go to drive f: (not 100% sure on the drive of the 3G modem) make a copy

of all the data on the drive & save to a new created folder VMC_Lite. (Create Folder)

Step 4: Extract the software that u’ve downloaded under my documents & run

HOST20.11.06.04.00.03.exe

Step 5: Run Installation

Step 6: Shutdown & Restart pc after software has been installed. (Unplug the 3G Modem)

Step 7: Plug Modem in after System has Restarted

Step 8: Open Mobile Connect (Icon on Desktop)

Step 9: Go to Settings -> Network connection Settings

Step 10: Click New, 3G, Number: *99***16# click Save -> Ok

Step 11: Click on connect

This is not VMC 9.xx dashboard

What is it that you are trying to do and why. Let's see if we can help ?

If you wish to monitor signal strength etc...you can use the app by ginggs:
Code:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=59080

Download:
Code:
http://www.tintin.za.net/e620tool10013.zip

It says Unable to locate Huawei E620 Device. Can i find it somewhere for E220?

Thanks

Had a brief look at ginggs' thread, haven't tried the util myself, might give it a try, looks like a cool app has evolved there :).

Firmware version of my E220 is "11.110.05.00.00", what firmware version is your E220 running with?

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

Thank you, sorry, hello all :)

My FW is 076.11.07.106 (is it possible)?

Now i downloaded ginggs' newest release and it finds the modem, but it says:

Sent: AT^CURC=1
Expected: "OK"
Received: "ERROR
"

After this it says its terminating.

I'm trying to test this in hyperterminal, and i can now get the signal quality. Its not bad, 75dBm, but my download speed is varying from 20k to 250k and i dont know why. Also, i tried the ^SYSINFO, but i cannot understand really those numbers. Could someone tell me, where can i find some docs about it? Which number means what? Thank you :)

Yes it is. I believe this is a previous version. The numbers don't makes sense. You can re-flash with the version below. I have done it and all is OK.

This is the latest firmware, it also supports Vista. It can be downloaded from Vodacoms download page. http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/mobile_data/downloads.jsp

I think this is a command used by the E620 Data card. The software was originaly written for the E620 & then adapted for the E220. You can look at the following thread it explains it all.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=59080&highlight=e620+tool&page=16

You get different errors depending on which dashboard you used. Huawei or Vodafone.

I suggest you use sky.akash's procedures. You have to be patient because it has to unload/load the modem.

As posted by sky.akash in another thread.

I have been using this app for a couple of weeks and I have found that if you have used the VMC/Huawei/MTN E220 software first it does cause a problem when trying to use this app.

This is the procedure I use to get it to work first time, every time :
Your speakers must be on.
Plug in your E220. After about 5 seconds you will hear a single click/beep when you Xp picks it up.
After another 5 to 10 seconds you will hear a slow double click/beep and then a fast double click/beep. Start the E620 Tool immediately thereafter. Having it on the desktop is the easiest.
The E620 Tool will start up (no initialisation) then you will see your Huawei software also start and try to initialise. Hide the initialisation block on the Huawei software and close the main window.
You can now use the USSD commands on the E620 Tool or connect.

If you need to use your Huawei software thereafter, just close the E620 Tool and open the Huawei software, which should work fine after initialising.

If you have been using your Huawei software first, and then need to use the E620 tool, it will have a problem starting up. After you try to open it a couple of times, it will attempt to re-initialise. Once you hear the two sets of double clicks/beeps you must start the E620 Tool immediately as per the above procedure otherwise the Huawei software will start up first, then you are back to square one.
E620 Tool

Dowload it from here, latest version. http://www.nerve.org.za/e620tool/

Huawei E220 Vodafone Image compressor Issue

Huawei E220 Vodafone Image compressor Issue

Dose anyone know how to turn the images back to high resolution using the Huawei E220 Vodafone data card Modem?

I have a new Huawei E220 Vodafone data card installed and works fine but when I browse the internet all JPEG images are low resolution.

Apparently there are settings on the modem that can turn the Huawei E220 Vodafone Image compressor off.

Please help

1) Where do you connect your E220 modem, PC or Notebook and connected to which port.
2) No modem can turn off image resolution. You have a setup problem with your Internen explorer. Not that I am aware of.
3) Which version of dashboard software are you using.

We don't have that problem in South Africa bcos that automatic compression feature was disabled by Vodacom at the network-level after numerous complaints from members of this forum.

Perhaps you should try the [searchforum]generic Huawei E220 dashboard software[/searchforum].

Did not know this was possible. Why would anybody want to do that at the hardware/firmware level..

The in-line compression gave everyone around 20 - 30% extra data, for free.

So on a 1G package, you would actually download 1.3G, etc.

If you needed to a see a specific pic in hi-res, you just clicked on it.

So, I still think the compression system was very useful.
