So I'm really in two minds as to whether to get MTN uncapped lite... I basically want to use it as a back up link for my flaky DSL. However comments on the forums are anything from blind hatred of the product to being absolutely fantastic.

I'm probably more concerned about being locked into a 2 year contract for a service that could potentially suck...

Anyone have any advice ?

It can be great at times (Like mine is now) or you'll regret ever making a decision to get it. In my opinion get Cell C's Giga20 package because after 3GB on MTN you get throttled. And the Cell C package is R100 cheaper than MTN. Honestly if this wasn't a 24 month contract I would have gotten the Cell C one because in my experience they are way faster than MTN. I hope this helps because contracts ties you down. At least the Cell C one is only for 12 months. If you only want to use it as a backup then 3GB is probably enough but I personally download so I would love to have the freedom to schedule my downloads after midnight so I can use the 15GB for downloads and the 5GB for browsing and streaming. But in the end you have to decide. What I like about MTN's package is that you can still browse even after your cap is finished. Like I said, hope this helps. Sorry for mentioning Cell C in a MTN thread but there is other options available.

well, sometimes I get more than the 265 they give us (after capped). I use it for work, so no hassle here. Downloading is a dream:D

Are you running the test with active downloads? Coz if you are then a Latency of 2231 ms seems possible.

I actually have a serious problem with this package. We have had it now for about 6 or 7 months. The first 3 months was fine the speed was awesome, I was even satisfied with the speed after the 3 gig cap. Unfortunately for the past 4 months my router is so slow that my internet times out even when trying to open google. I have MTN on my blackberry and its internet is working 100% in my house, so I doubt it is a server or signal issue. The problem is that I have a MTN contract through Nashua Mobile, so I cannot call any of the MTN help lines, as the Data contract is directly with MTN, and as soon as I get directed to an operator I get a pre recorded message saying :"You are not an MTN customer please call your service provider", even if I alter the number to the sim cards number on the Router. I have reset, rebooted, reinstalled, but nothing seems to work......Kind of like most people at MTN

I've had Uncapped Lite for almost 6 months now and I'm still extremely happy with it. I'm throttled at the moment, just did two speed tests and the results, for me at least, are very good.

South African:

Test conducted on Wed Jan 16 2013 07:50:31 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 720 kbps (90 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 676 kbps (84.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 124 ms

International:

Test conducted on Wed Jan 16 2013 08:02:55 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 455 kbps (56.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 388 kbps (48.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 454 ms

I'm really surprised at these current speeds as they're not always this good when throttled. Normally I get around 300 - 350 kbps download and 200 - 250 kbps upload speeds when throttled. Unfortunately I haven't done any speed tests when not throttled for quite some time now but download speeds during that first 3GB are very fast, at least 1200 kbps and upwards.

Anyway, I would still, without any doubt, highly recommend this to anyone looking for an uncapped mobile product.
