Just spoke to them again. This time I was told there was a network failure and a bunch of numbers have been barred. The bar on mine was apparently lifted while I spoke to the call centre but there is still no improvement on my connection.
After having acceptable throttle speeds and connection and then having barely functioning internet is unecceptable. This is not what I signed on for!
Also MTN hasn't to my knowledge given any announcements regarding the throttle speeds so this kind of treetment of its customers just doesn't fly.

So I called 808 again, and the consultant told me that there haven't been a problem/issue reported regarding the uncapped lite speeds. :wtf: Seriously waste of time and money.

Called, am throttled so have to accept my 7kB throttled speeds.

According to the fair use policy the throttle speed is supposed to be 384k. That should give you download speed of about 25-32kbps.
Anyway the throttle speeds in my experience have always been higher than that. Been using this for more than a year and my throttle speeds on average have been about 500-800k.
The number you need to call is 1555, I think 808 can't really do anything.
I was told on my last call to change my APN to internet but that, like everything else has not worked and I'm still stuck with a crappy conection.

my speed is also between 500-700 when capped..I don't mind the 256kbps, but 140 is unacceptable.

I just spoke to MTN and guess what the woman told me.

The fair use policy states that you can be throttled from 0 to 384kbps.

What utter bull****

True. Nothing surprising there. Even how ADSL works.

As from 01 Feb 2012, MTN will enhance the fair use policy so customers can enjoy higher speeds after reaching the fair use cap. This means that once they have used 3GB or 10GB of internet, their connection speed will be limited to up to 256kbps for MTN Uncapped Lite and 384kbps for MTN Uncapped Internet Pro for the remainder of their billing month.

Yes BS!!! Have they been sued for breach of contract?

Maddie, so is this the official reason you eventually got out of them? So I take it the current up-to-**** speeds are the future of Uncapped Lite when throttled?

I'm also definitely phoning MTN again later today.

Yeah, I was also told to change my APN to internet but that didn't do diddly-squat. I'm still on 70 - 90kbps download and international ping of around 290 - 320ms.

Maybe there's some undercover MTN "agent" lurking on MYBB. If our speeds get too high, they throttle you again...twice in one month...not bad, MTN.:D

This just makes me furious!
The reason I got this package is because we don't have any adsl ports at our exchange and it looked like the best alternative at the time.
Now MTN is just as full of BS excuses as Telkom was when I was waiting in vain for a port and paying a phone bill every month.
Seems like some of us are just doomed not to have proper internet at home.
Does anyone know of good alternatives that are also uncapped and hopefully have decent latency?
