I have just ditched mywireless in favour Telkom adsl, mainly because of the packet loss that I was getting.

I realise I should be using the 4G unshaped service, but, finances don't allow it, so I need to get my connection as almost perfect as possible.

Now to my question:

What is the best MTU setting and rwin setting for adsl 384? Prime objective is to reduce packet loss.

In fact using drtcp, what will be the best settings for all the other settings.

Using win2000

How is the router connected to your machine? If it is directly connected using USB then Windows will negotiate the MTU for you and you will get the best.

Purely for interest here are results of my tests. It shows I need to increase my MTU and change my rwin

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer

TCP properties for IP =
Browser/OS = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

MTU = 1430
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1390
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 32000
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 32000

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511520 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
255760 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
127880 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
63940 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1280 kbps (160 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 512 kbps (64 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 123 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
