Lots of clever people, who outbid their competition by needlessly large margins, because they needed to show they had bigger balls, than the competition.

If DSTV cannot sell enough of those exclusive rights they so gratuously buy, they they should let someone else get exclusive rights, and buy the rights, in the same way they sell rights to SABC, and similar.

Yup. Sport broadcasting cost so much because the rights are locked up in an auction that grants a monopoly. So Dstv bid a lot of sport broadcasting rights because it know it can recoup it. If there are competitive pressures then they will bid less and pay less.

Currently users are paying a premium not because of sports but because of the monopoly of broadcasting rights of sport. It is a different thing...

There are more than enough re-broadcasts, so you don't need to have Ketchup with your broadcast.

I'm just explaining why premium subs are dropping. Hubby used to be able to watch the rugby, wifey could watch her cooking shows, son could watch his series and daughter could watch her dramas all at the same time. Now you can only watch 2 channels and the kids fight all the time and DSTV Premium becomes just a "luxury" and not a necessity anymore.

No idea, never really tried it, I have these archaic boxes under my TV that allowed me to watch DSTV.

I mean sure, 10 years ago I'd agree with you, this new fangled streaming services is taking the world by storm. But if it starts doing what it's doing in the US and first world countries, people will start going back to cable/satelitte.

Yeah, I have that problem. You keep looking for something to watch and it takes longer to decide than the length of the episodes. I end up watching series that I have watched before as that is what interests me. The descriptions are not good enough to peak interest, especially on Netflix.

I know what I want to watch, and I don’t sit in front of the TV, and watch whatever, is pre-programed by some one else.

I watch what I want, when I have time to do so.


DSTV have ascended to lofty heights, and left their market behind, in the process.

Cable and streaming are the same thing, a whole lot off channels bundled together, and you jump around from channel to channel for whatever you want to watch.

Only difference is the delivery medium.

Finding the advertising on Brit TV rather refreshing compared to the South African versions, which are by comparison just meh.
