After querying them what the actual abuse is (i.e. is it total bandwidth or is it line-speed or is it protocol HTTPS vs HTTP) I got the following response:
MWeb Abuse Department said:
The abuse process is not related to how much total bandwidth is utilised in a month. Uncapped means precisely that, Uncapped. There are no monthly limits.
The notifications are triggered by (amongst other parameters) a prolonged period of daily usage patterns between 20 and 40 GBs. The abuse system looks at a variety of factors, such as bandwidth consumption patterns and historical usage, to determine who gets flagged. The system does this dynamically and automatically, so there is no set guideline.
That is as much detail as I am able to provide you with regarding this process without completely breaching any internal policies.
As long as you manage your usage patterns appropriately (no unattended automated transfers for several days) you should not trigger any further notifications or warnings.
So my daily downloads are between 8-18GBs and very seldom over 18GB. The automated downloads are capped at 150KB/sec and with that it would not consume more than 13-14GB/day. Add a few more GBs for browsing, streaming, online gaming etc you will get to current consumption.
Based on the above response from MWEB, despite them not saying that there is a cap, they do introduce a cap, as one is not allowed to use bandwidth over a certain amount per day. And they DO cap irrespective if one uses torrents, newsservers or just streams live video and live radio 24x7.
I have now already changed schedules so that download bandwidth is throttled based on time, but this is still not good enough for MWEB: 00:00 - 05:00 = max 350KB/sec, 05:00 - 20:00 = max 150KB/sec, 20:00 - 23:59 = max 250KB/sec.
If MWeb has such a problem with prolonged use, than just inform users that they will be throttled during peak periods - surely it can't be so difficult or?
I do find the remark "there is no set guideline" unbelievable, as with IT an algorithm needs parameters and thresholds and will not just make something up. So surely someone at MWeb would have devised a abuse and not treat it as some national secret?
I consider uncapped ADSL the same way as hiring a car with unlimited mileage - there is no restriction. MWeb makes us believe it's unlimited mileage, but it's really saying that you have driven too much and they will take the car away. MWeb will not tell you that you are only allowed to drive XXkm/day or XXkm/month so that you can change your driving behaviour.
