MWEB ADSL capacity boost during Seacom downtime

TLTL. We have this same issue every time Seacom goes down - they claim to have decent redundancy, but then scramble for additional capacity. Why was the redundant capacity not in place to begin with?

Doesn't MWEB use Eassy at its backup? If so that would explain the problems experienced this weekend since both systems were down.

Strangely though is that other ISP’s which were having similar problems to a lesser extend is also having less hassles now with connectivity?

I am scheming that Mweb is busy with PR at this moment.

connectivity seems much better on MWEB now... some web browsing is a bit slow, but generally good!

No ISP is going to have 1:1 redundancy for consumer products. The real question is why MWeb still base the core of their products on Seacom.

MWEB ADSL capacity boost during Seacom downtime

MWEB has been able to secure additional international capacity for its ADSL network during the Seacom outage

72 hours later missing the 24 hours promise deadline.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Please note that SEACOM have confirmed cable breaks, This could take some time to fix.

SEACOM are obtaining capacity on an alternate cable, that should restore our network to full capacity within the next 24hrs.

Please bear with us during this time.
Evening, you can't compare us to another provider during an outage.

We certainly have allot going for us, e.g. DOTA 2 servers :p
Hi guys, we are in the final stages of arranging alternative bandwidth. Hang in there we should be back to full capacity by early afternoon.

Nobody is requesting 1:1 redundancy though. The issue here is that this keeps happening, and they keep doing a last minute scramble for additional capacity from the same provider (as you pointed out) whenever it does. It's almost as if they have no real backup plan in place.

They make it sound as if they are doing something good. 100% redundancy should be on call at all times in case of an emergency like this. Its not like this is a rare or unpredictable event. Seacom goes down all the damn time. I feel as if we have been lied to by Mweb, as they boldly claimed to have redundancy in place, yet we spend a week with shoddy connectivity while they scramble to try find a company willing to spare some capacity.

Of course we have. Corners were cut, but all we ever wanted was just basic services. Who in his right mind would have expected 100% p2p or full hd streaming? How about on Friday already just surfing + email for most people and not forcing us to go and buy bandwidth someplace else...

Well this experience was painful enough to motivate me to look elsewhere. Previous seacom outages have been a slight inconvenience but this last one was unbelievable. Took me all of 5 minutes to activate with Afrihost and who knows from here... Must admit though that MWEB has been excellent for me.

Am i the only one who doesn't notice a problem with my MWEB connection. Been playing dota2,browsing,youtube,twitch all weekend. My line dropped a few times though, Telkoms fault of course, magically fixed itself by the next morning.

My net was at a standstill over the weekend, I got home this afternoon and everything seems to be running at a decent pace. No gaming disconnects from international servers, and even some P2P action.

Also was a literal standstill for me on the weekend - fine this evening. Haven't done p2p yet.

I think what we want is that when this sort of thing happens in the future, we get this decent 90% access we have this afternoon, within 12 hours of the seacom outage, not a full couple of days later.

Edit: And I say 12 hours because surely they must have a quick solution to the ISP world's most DUH emergency on hand.

MWEB didn't do squat. Seacom fixed their patching to allow their customers to use alternate routes... shrugs.

PR all you want MWEB - I won't use you again...
