MWEB closes Wi-Fi service

Closedweb and Mweb when they close their doors South Africans will be free finally.

This seems like a sensationalist headline and some verbal sleight-of-hand

We knew almost a year ago that M-Web was exiting the public hotspot business and retaining only its business and residential customers. They sold out to Didata and the understanding was already communicated to the public that WirelessCo would run the wholesale and AlwaysOn the retail hotspot. Isn't that what happened?

I am not sure why this unfolding is such a surprise - especially to MyBB

At most, the issue was the timing and quality the final communication

Pity about this. What I really liked about the MWEB free wifi over AlwaysOn is that you weren't required to log into an annoying captive portal each time. Just wander into the mall and your phone connects to the Wifi. Now with using AlwaysOn you have to be specifically connect to it and do the captive portal dance.

I have never even used mweb wifi at hotspots. Always On was always better for me at the airport or Mugg & Bean and such.

Because 50% of the people in the mall are in food court torrenting on the free wifi.

N1 city had a 20mb fiber line for the wifi ,torrents was quite good on it :)

No sir charging my parents R200 per GB was fcking nonsense.

I recall they were quite transparent about it, with various options/preventative measures for the client. I can't really comment, wouldn't recommend them for capped. Perhaps you as their knowledgeable son should've known best?

Give me one moment then I will prove every single word i that paragraph of yours wrong. Transparency was the LAST word I would use.

Transparent.. wonder why no one else have this love for Mweb like you do?

Note: Seems like the original Thread "R200 OOB shark something" is deleted from myBB... ( I can't find it )

But some other reading to show transparency is NOT the word to use here mrPostman, as an honest man yourself you will remember that Mweb was the ISP that kept their thresholds private when all other ISPs all ready openly declared theirs... ( Just a small example )

None of the above, actually.

Just published a follow-up: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/wireless/122564-future-of-mweb-wi-fi.html

Nothing underhanded has happened, as far as I can tell, and the intention of the article was not to insinuate anything like that. It was just surprising.

They do, they just don't talk about it publicly.

The best things in life are often kept secret.

Yes I have seen all the threads. I understand they felt/were burned, but that shouldn't extend to your badmouthing their non capped products like uncapped and AlwaysOn/free wifi where there is no OOB concern. By all means warn capped users about it. Let's be fair.

In agree with your last part.

But the first part regarding :

"They do, they just don't talk about it publicly.

Look I was a Mweb user from the early days up until August 2013 I think my first contract with them was in 1999 and I can tell you with honesty after 2001 transparency was never a word I would used and if you want to take recent years 2011-2013.... Please don't.

I must admit, walking into a Mall , MWEB’ would connect seamlessly after a simple once off registration...I thought in all honesty the malls paid for the service to attract customers... Always on is somehow in cahoots with a store like pnp & checkers would have their own access points....and own registration process which is a headache,,,, imo switch off Wi-Fi when entering any public space...

Does it mean that this is the end of the FON routers?

Hi Venomous, nothing changed with regards to FON. Fon customers now get uncapped wifi at always on spots where they previously got 5GB.

So no more free wifi at airports & hotels for Mweb subscribers?

Hi Fudzy

@MWEB WiFi hotspots have changed to @AlwaysOn. You can continue to use WiFi by signing in with your MWEB details.
