MWEB is so funny!

I'm going to monitor it... if it doesn't pick up, I'll change the account to 512k and get the same speeds!

Unshaped protocols such as HTTP and email can run at a maximum of your line speed. Shaped protocols may not always run at the maximum line speed of course. The rated line speed is an indication of the maximum line speed, not the average line speed, of course.

You wouldn't be getting that speed right now on 512k. maybe only between 1am-7am.

I must say I thought it was pretty well known that exactly what you're doing is considered abuse, and it makes sense to me anyway.

Pulling 600GB every month by unshaping their news server is what I'd also have to call abuse and stop people doing if I was MWeb. Especially if you're downloading all day at unshaped speeds, that's not fair. Btw do you have a 10mb line? That would make it a little worse ;/

And out of interest why do you keep saying you don't use torrents and it's "just" the news server? It's all mostly international data to MWeb (except what's cached), what would the difference be?

With respect to the OP, I have to say I agree with this.

And damn if I'd been paying for MWeb's 4mb shaped but downloading full speed anytime like an unshaped account, pulling 600Gb every month I'd be praising MWeb. You should consider yourself lucky you've got that for so long, no other account in SA would be as good.

Well, I do, but the MWEB package only allows 4MB speeds so I only get 4MB speeds.

As for Alestorm and the torrents question; I've seen what torrents do to a network setup... it messes it up so thus, Usenet is not nearly as bad.

I see, I'm not sure about all the technicalities but it's strange that torrents are then used as a distribution mechanism for Linux distros or whatever else. Also Usenet adds extra data onto everything you download so it generates more traffic in that way.

In any case I think you should see that if everyone unshaped their P2P in some way and downloaded massive amounts at any time it simply would not work. Everybody's experience would be terrible and MWeb would probably lose money. There's a reason the unshaped accounts are so much more expensive: it's the only way we can all enjoy uncapped. So I don't really understand why you think this is unjustified.

From my experience on a 512 shaped account using news servers shaping gets quite bad from 6am to 1am. Now when I say bad, I mean bad. During the day I am lucky to see 2kB/s, and lucky to see 10kBps from about 6pm to 1am. Then again it also appears that speeds are user specific, as not everyone has the same experience with regard to speeds. I use a SSL port 563 connection whith my WA account, and have on occassion forgot to change back to normal ports (honestly) when switching back to my MWEB account, and found no difference in the shaping between SSL and normal.

That's interesting, because we expect the SSL download to come down at line speed.

Mweb made it abundantly clear that bypassing shaping for mass-downloads will result in a warning & eventually a cancellation.

It's not like I'm trying funny tactics, I'm paying to do this... bloody idiots!
SSL mass downloads are considered "funny tactics" because they bypass shaping.

The whole thing was explained in a MyBB article here.

Best bet is to respond to the abuse notification & stop...else your a/c will get nuked. Sucks but thats the way it is.

I think some international news servers might have their IPs logged by the Mweb shapers, in the same way that rapidshare and other file sharing sites do. So SSL may not always "work."

Anyway I had a similar abuse notice from Mweb at the end of October for the same reason, and so I just use the Mweb news server now. It is very fast on cached (popular) stuff after hours. Hasn't slowed me down too much. Having said that, I don't do 600GB a month.

LOL OP what exactly did you think would constitute abuse? 900GB by bypassing the shaping? No Account in this price range would give you near that amount of data per month.

Be happy they are warning you and move on to downloading between 12 and 7 like the rest of us.

From last night till this morning.

11KB/s !!!
Peak at 15KB/s

You really think one should be paying for this ???

F'ing PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!

gdiza with all due respect either you can't read or have been living under a rock. surely you didn't thought it was "normal use" and within the T&C's to pull that kind of data at that kind of speed without negatively impacting the grid as a whole ?

1) mweb has made it clear that you must not cheat the shaper by using something like ssl or any other means that would have shaped protocols going unshaped. shaped protocols is shaped for a reason, that you can't bastardize the available pool of bandwidth by yourself leaving the rest of us with less because you cheated and costing more than you should have on average.

2) mweb has also made it clear that you might get detected by the shaper as cheating for doing something like steam or having to vpn/ssl large data quantities for legit reasons other than just bypassing it. in those cases they have stated that you can come to the party and they will investigate and struck the record clean.

3) it's imho a well known fact that CT is ****ed. i'm getting decent speeds here in GP/PTA which tells me it's around your area that's problem which is either the network it self, the exchange, you yourself or the real issue as with linoman something to do with him to int (we tested USA which gave *** speeds).

:edit:
you do know there is a subscriber feed back thread right here without the need to have yet another new thread on the service ?

@gdiza: This may well be because you are on a shaped account downloading via peer-to-peer protocols.
