MWEB is so funny!

I know, that's why I said it's just in this case. Looks like it!!! But then your first name might be Mike?
Nope not Mike, read it as one word :p
Unlikely. We've only seen one "slip" by an MWeb rep. in this regard, despite many more than one person sending a PM to the reps over the last months. If your suggestion were true, then they all the would have to be constantly making the same mistake and we would be seeing first names in all posts from them.
It still doesn't change anything, I wouldn't want that slip up happening to me.

I'm sure Will@MWeb will correct it as soon as he sees it.

Apologies I didn't mean to invade anyone's privacy, however considering that the same issue was raised by ngdiza on our Facebook support page where his full name is visible (and his nick is part of his Facebook username) it didn't seem to be an issue to address him by his first name.

it boggles the mind, but o well we play it "anonymous" on myb and "non-anonymous" on fb. though some of us do have fb...

Hi Nicolas

Steam traffic is classified in a completely different way and would not be flagged. You have recieved a first warning for extensive use of SSL tunneling to increase the speed of your downloads on a shaped product. This is in convravention of the AUP and as you've now been warned, regardless of how you feel about this policy, I trust that you will comply with it going forward. If you require full speed P2P please move to an unshaped solution.

Many Thanks
Will

How about keeping the nick anonymous?

:erm:

Maybe this Internet thing is new to them...

LOL. Yeah, if you're rant on FB using your real name, and here, expect to get exposed.

I DL whole movies in less than an hour on WA, after 6'ish at night. I only have a 25GB package.

Imagine if I could do that 24/7, at say 700MB per movie = 492GB's per month

I don't use uncapped because I like my pings when gaming, and I like my fast DL's when I want to. You're taking the piss, Gdiza - I'd pay almost R6K DL'ing that imaginary figure.

Cough up, or shut up!

I'm currently running a line synced at 2MB via WebAfrica's special, and 384K Mweb uncapped for almost purely local news server downloads, although I have been using it for a few Black ops games since WA has horrible routing to the JHB servers.

What's nice about this setup, is that I can leave the downloads running and still continue to surf and play games unimpeded. The line can do about 200KB/s, and if 40KB goes to downloads, I still have a comfortable 160KB/s for more critical tasks.

I'd love to switch to a cheaper setup - Currently R499+R219=R718 for 2Mb sync 30GB of FAST bandwidth and 384K mweb uncapped. R599 for 512K uncapped is barely competitive with the shaping MWEB does, so I'm stuck in my current position :(

The speeds I've been getting out of the MWEB news servers have been quite dissapointing though. I'd probably be better off buying IS local bandwidth packages at the current rate. It's convenient being unmetered, but the shaping and speed is a pain.

EDIT: Oh. I've had some luck last month using the 196.28.78.229 server, but that's stopped connecting again, and news.mweb.co.za has been at 4KB/s with a few 10KB/s spikes during the times I've checked tonight. Running non-stop 24/7 at 10KB/s will only get 25GB. Less than a significantly cheaper IS 30GB package.

EDIT2: And back to not connecting...

I don't think there is an ISP offering unshaped uncapped with no T&C or other "restrictions", such that you can download on any/all protocols 24/7 at line speed every month. Certainly not at an equivalent price to other ISPs shaped accounts.
You do get these kind of accounts if you're a business and can afford 1:1 contention (CIR). The prices won't make you smile though. R37000 per month for 4Mbps Committed Information Rate and its generally not possible to deliver this over ADSL.

Yeah, it is a fine line between "legitimate" shaping of the service and shaping to such an extent that it could be argued that the service effectively becomes useless. 11KB/s could be considered acceptable for a small file. However, most files downloaded on the shaped protocols are large files. 11KB/s on a 100MB file take just over 2.5 hours; a 500MB file will take 12.5 hours. Is it unacceptable if you get the file in 12 hours?
I think he's finally got the point, though a little raggedy.

At what stage does shaping become blocking? A 384 user gets any download on torrents measured in bytes during the day. Is that acceptable, since a completion estimate of 2 weeks is effectively stopping that service.

[-]Thanks for your smarmy attitude. Why not take it elsewhere. I could give you a suggestion or two.[/-]

MWEB e-mail section is run by a tard. He's been told time and again about several problems and nothing gets fixed.

[-]Oh wait, you have a bad attitude towards everyone. And you don't like MWeb. We get it.[/-]

Do not feed the trolls, do not feed the trolls, do not feed the trolls.

And it seems .229 is running fine again.

Would it be possible for MWEB to supply usage statistics for their uncapped accounts?

I would love a proper measurement of how much bandwidth they supplied me.

What statistics are you wanting? You have daily/session upload and download totals on the MyADSL page.

Argh - I must admit, I've never made use of the MWEB pages. They decided to link my account to an @mweb.co.za address that I have curretn access to, instead of my personal email address that was used for both registration and FICA :p

---

EDIT: Well, managed to get into the account :( User stupidity/laziness on my side... Thanks SabreWolfy.

Interesting mention on the site: "MWEB Protected access" - which blocks some incoming connections - not clear what exactly it blocks, but it's enabled by default.

I wonder if this could affect business accounts, though I have no idea what exactly it blocks... Might as well leave it for now, as it does not seem to affect me.

---

More on the usage, I maxed out one day at 4400MB! That's an average of 52KB/s! Definitely more than 384K should be capable of. I doubt if I'd see close to those speeds if my line sync was 384K :(

So far I've definitely gotten value for money from this account. And at least I've used mostly local, which should hopefully be cheaper to MWEB than international bandwidth.

I might flex some more of it for Steam downloads because I've had very little luck WebAfrica's steam content server lately, though with all of the bandwidth I've "saved" with MWEB, I've got plenty of capped bandwidth left this month...

---

Email will now be fetched from GMail as well - allways handy ;)

It's to prevent certain services from being shared out on your connection. Mainly ports 23 (telnet) and 80 (HTTP). This means that if your router presents its interface to the internet, you can't access it from the outside. And you can't host anything over HTTP from your internal LAN either.

If you don't host web pages, then it won't impact you, as client connections are all in a port range outside what MWEB blocks. For business accounts I would expect them to not have a port 80 block, in any event.
