MWEB sent me this...

Dear MWEB Customer
This email serves as a notice regarding your MWEB ADSL service.

We have detected usage on your ADSL account which is in contravention of our Acceptable Usage Policy, as outlined in the ADSL Service Terms and Conditions.

The usage we have detected is as follows:

Excessive use of unshaped network protocols on a shaped product indicating an intentional bypassing of the network shaping.

Please acknowledge receipt of this notice within 24 hours, indicating your intention to rectify the situation. It would also be helpful if you provided us with some feedback on the activities you were engaged in so that we can advise you on the choice of a more appropriate product to suit your specific needs.

Should this behaviour persist, you will receive a second notification giving you 48 hours in which to migrate to a product more appropriate to your usage requirements. Failure to comply within this time will result in the cancellation of your service.

How is downloading via port 81 with SSL abuse?

If I revert to port 563, I get 40KB/s - excuse me?!?

I'm using News Servers, not torrents!

You naughty boy.
Repent, sinner!!

Bwahahahaha!

I assume that by posting the notice here that you have now acknowledged receipt thereof?

You don't have a choice hey, as soon as you get the e-mail, it is basically a auto responder and a case is opened (help ticket case) on your behalf, even if you say NO or YES to the read receipt (I said NO)

Yeah, I know their process... did you respond to their request?

I got a message from a friend via Facebook, apparently, he got the e-mail too, and he basically has been buying games on STEAM and downloading non stop... he has also been told he is ABUSING.

I think MWEB need to catch a wakeup!

That or MWEB are really struggling after today's little drama!

gdiza please PM me what your monthly usage is?

gdiza please PM me what your monthly usage is?

Why?

I think it's obvious what they are doing, they are going after people now, I've had the same monthly usage for ages... I've changed nothing - I never torrent! I just think MWEB are feeling it now and they want to stop people.

I tried to login to "myaccount.mweb.co.za" but I entered the password too many times... But I think maybe 600GB ±

Moving (many?) (hundreds?) of GB over an encrypted link is considered a contravention of the AUP on shaped accounts. This is old news and has been discussed to death in other threads. Doesn't matter if it's port 81 or 8100 or <insert random port here>. It's encrypted with SSL and therefore becomes unshaped. As MWeb has detailed at length in other threads, a consistent pattern of usage will result in the warning. Downloading (a few?) GB (occassionally?) over SSL is not unacceptable.

Was just asking.

@gdiza: Maybe it is that exact usage OVER the last months that has now resulted in the warning. They look for a consistent pattern of downloading behaviour -- and you'd just stated that your usage has been the same "for ages". MWeb have stated many, many times before that the warnings are not based PURELY on usage. If you pull 600+GB per month WITHOUT bypassing the shapers, you won't get a warning. If you pull (some unknown number of) GB in (some unknown number of) months over SSL, you risk getting a warning. That "unknown number of GB" could be 10GB per month or 100GB or 250GB -- I don't know. MWeb has not released that information and we've discussed that issue at length as well. They have made it clear that you need to actively go out of your way to intentionally and consistently engage in activity which bypasses the shaping or otherwise infringes on the AUP.

So I set it to use normal settings.

40KB/s peeking at 50KB/s

Gotta love this... I mean really...
I've just about had it, it's been pathetic for the past month. Considering paying a bit more and getting an Openweb Gold account instead.

lol I understand your frustration but 600gigs average usage on that MWEB account is surely not what the account was designed for. That is excessive even by international standards.
