MWEB reduces uncapped ADSL prices

OK so I read the article and did not see an them speaking to the 4MB line (All Inclusive uncapped shaped) which is what I have with Mweb. So I called the billing department and they told me that they will not be reducing the price of there 4MB because they feel that their 4MB price is already competitive enough. ICSA said that there will be a 30% reduction across the board as the IPC was reduced by telkom.

How does this fit in with Mweb only reducing their 1Mb line? so they stealing from the other accounts so gain growth or market share. WOW!

At the same time they say that they are not going to give a reduction but instead pump that reduction back into the business and give better broadband, for WHO?? 1MB Customer? So Im sorry but there will be no reduction on your 4MB line. WoW! So I asked to speak to the Manager and he tells me, sorry but the manager is busy with an irated customer... haha Good One!
Sally how are they stealing from you
mweb charges R199 for 1024 account
you pay R539 for 4096 account
how do they steal from you to make the other account cheaper
looks more to me like your account was already cheap for the data capability

although I must say I would also welcome a 4mb price drop

I wasn't looking for pricing plans, just the process that is likely to happen should Telkom do their expected upgrades.

Again, this would be asking MWeb to reveal its future business strategy to the market, and a strategy that would be based on speculation of Telkom's plans. It is very unlikely they want to part with this information or OpenWeb will just copy MWeb's plans the day before they do it ;)

Faulty analogy is faulty.

If you saw a price reduction on the 250g and 500g bottles of Ricoffee, most people would expect the 1kg tin to also get a price drop.

I was just trying to illustrate a point, not deliver a scientific thesis. :)

Re: The 4 meg guys getting no reduction: If you go into Pick 'n' Pay and they have Ricoffee reduced to 99c, do you then demand that they drop the price on Nescafe as well, 'cos you don't drink Ricoffee?

Yes. I DEMANDED exactly that and threw up a huge fuss. They said "you're a mybroadband forum user, aren't you?". Then they kicked me out.

*pissing and moaning*

They are under no obligation to drop the price of the 4 meg line.

I am not sure why you think they are.

Previously, the one meg was costing R299, more than half of what you are paying for a data account 4 times faster. It needed a drop, the 4 meg didn't.

Although, I still think it should be R499, for sake of people like me with OCD. :D

Sjoe, post-grad degrees are not what they used to be...

I see it more of a technical/admin issue than a business strategy. but point taken. (wasn't really expecting an answer anyway, esp. today when the mweb guys must be ubber flooded)

The total package (even with the Telscum baggage) is about the same as DSTV, but with choice.
Going to discuss this at home tonight!

Mweb will probably improve the value of the 4meg accounts by reducing the shaping/throttling somewhat(which has already been happening for the last while).

Well a 1kg bottle of Ricoffee still costs less than four 250g bottles. (Actually even less than 3x250g bottles). So buying the 1kg in bulk is still a better deal.

Yeah, this is pretty much the case. The margins on the 4 meg account must be really low already so it makes sense that they wouldn't drop the price on the 4 meg account.

It would still be nice though :p

Why is the all inclusive R1 cheaper than just leaving the line with Telkom...

I like the convenience of having both with Mweb (so upgrading / downgrading can all be handled by them).

But I guess that convenience comes at the cost of not being able to move between providers as easily.

btw. the 4mb line has a better cost benefit of getting them together, you save more like R53pm or something.

Hi there

The 30% pricing reduction announced by ICASA is on the wholesale cost of IPC bandwidth, which is how we connect to our customers on Telkom's ADSL backhaul. This is only one of the many factors that influence the overall cost of running our network.

I can understand as a 4mb customer that you might feel some frustration at not seeing a price reduction, but remember that we've had this product at an awesome price for the last two years already and we felt it was time to bring real broadband to more of our customers.

The savings from IPC cuts that were not directed at price reductions are being channeled towards growing our network capacity and building an even stronger platform to ensure that we can continue to offer a world class ADSL product, which is to the benefit of all our customers.

Telkom dropped their wholesale price by a huge margin, the first time in years its done so, you are being left out of the benefit basket & still you're actively defending your ISP for giving your potential saving to someone else? Wow, I had no idea you were SO happy with your existing product that you'd not fight for a reduction.

No wonder SA consumers are raped left right and centre. You have no balls.

Yea, dude, the 4mb account is already a pretty great account. If you look at how much you can download, the cost per gig is stupid low.

Mweb have Made a big reduction creating a very good value for money 1mb account, and still people are doing a lot of complaining... come one guys, be reasonable.

Point taken but ICP is the rental for the ADSL line not the data
