MWEB - SEACOM OUTAGE UPDATE

Essay laughing all the way to the bank

Essay laughing all the way to the bank, lets assume Mweb were happy with Seacom, they are still going to pump millions into Essay because no business model can survive much longer without some kind of redundancy.
I put up with the crap service because it is uncapped. If it was not for uncapped I would have dumped Mweb by now :wtf: is it with the announcement that Tenent are our saviors, hell since they came to the party I cannot even browse properly.
As for all those people arguing about best use best effort T&C so Mweb owe us nothing need to remember one thing. If it was a cost factor that prevented Mweb from providing us with a sustained redundancy option Mweb would be hard pressed to argue in a court of law they did the best they could and still charge full price for a non existant service.
A week long internet outage is not a technical glitch but a major breach of contract.
And saying T& C's apply, well a first year law student will tell you, T & C's do not protect you against the Consumer Protection Act.
You have to supply a service to be paid. Pure and simple. And no one of the key tenants of the act is that T&C do not absolve you at all.
But i am an understanding idiot so I will put up with this **** for the week, but I can assure Mweb once Essay is up, you don't have redundancy then you can speak to the hand

Extract from here suggests that SEACOM is not obliged to provide any redundancy:

"A Seacom spokesperson told ITWeb that redundancy measures or alternative routes to get international bandwidth were the responsibility of the Internet service providers and that they should have plans in place."

Then as a service provider to service providers....Seacom is providing a crappy service. The moment competition enters the market WITH redundancy measure in place, Seacom is going to lose a lot of business.

MWeb *is* responsible for redundancy and has *failed*

Yeah. In a way I'm disappointed with MWeb, as they pull all their bandwidth/capacity eggs into the one SEACOM basket. Now that we know that the ISP is responsible for redundancy, I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with MWeb, as they are not able to provide this redundancy. I understand that there are limited options in this regard, but that should surely have been something they would have considered before launching their uncapped service? There's not much we as the user can do though -- their T&C cover them.

Before everyone jumps on me about the low cost of uncapped and we are getting what we paid for, etc. -- of course I agree. Uncapped is cheap and we all went in knowing that. I'm tolerant of outages -- up to a point. No international bandwidth for a day or two I can tolerate. More than that -- not even SLOW international -- is starting to push THEIR immunity according to their T&C.

They REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to get this sorted out TODAY.

And maybe give everyone a free month to compensate?

its amazing how people start to sing a different tune after a few days.

It's amazing how smarmy and immature you can be :) Grow up a little and realize that people's ideas and outlooks can change as the situation changes. I'm at least prepared to change my position, based on new evidence, and I was prepared to give MWeb the benefit of the doubt. My position is meaningless in this regard though -- wheather I'm pro-MWeb or anti-MWeb or neutral has no effect on the status of the SEACOM outage. My initial understanding was the SEACOM should provide redundancy when an outage occurs. New information we have now indicates that is not the case. MWeb are still not in contravention of their T&C.

What's changed? The cable was broken - the cable is broken.

On Axxess' site

SEACOM failure update - Current investigations indicate that a repeater has failed on segment 9 of the SEACOM cable, which is offshore to the north of Mombasa. ETR 6-8 days.

I am now aware that SEACOM is NOT responsible for reduncancy AND MWeb is unable to provide redundancy several days later. What is does indicate, is that MWeb's position in the internet market in the country appears to be less popular than they may have thought -- why is no-one else willing to sell them any capacity I wonder? :) Or is there legitimately simply NOT enough capacity? I'm really keen to know WHY we still have no international connectivity.

I currently have, and always have had, a 4Mbps 5GB capped package from MWeb, that costs R579pm. I did not ask to be moved to SEACOM, and I was never informed of this, except by myBB.

Now that SEACOM is broken, my terms of service have been changed unilaterally. I have to use the '-dsl' trick to get any international connectivity whatsoever (not uncapped, just normal HTTP).

I'm not angry, just pointing out the hipocrisy of MWeb...

It has been clear from the time that MWeb set up their own network, that they do not have the capacity to seamlessly re-route traffic when SEACOM goes down (multiple times), without major disruption (or total failure). Presumably business customers get higher priority, but other users just get left dangling...

Wait another week, and if nothing has improved - and we'll see how many fanboys are left.

It sounds like you've just discovered MWEB have been screwing you royally :D

Yeah, I've been quite happy with MWeb and I the move to offer uncapped in the country was a very important one -- credit to them for this. However, their eagerness to move into this market has possibly clouded their objectivity. They have failed to provide redundancy and their T&C protect them. We all knew/know this and there's not much we can do about it.

For all the scores of anti-MWeb people here -- think on this. This latest outage must have damaged MWeb considerably. How many new sign-ups have there been this week? How many people have canceled? I think MWeb must be seen as something of joke amongst the other ISPs. They came in shouting and screaming about wonderful uncapped, and yet again they have egg all over their face for days on end.

Downloading 100GB+ per month is great of course. But a fast, uncapped INTERMITTENT service is worse than a slower/capped RELIABLE service? The fact that I can pull down the internetz NEXT week does nothing for me NOW when I need to connect to an international site.

I'll admit my patience with MWeb has pretty much run out, FWIW. They need to deliver.

Absolute rubbish. It's not NEARLY so black and white. The many, many people who have downloaded several HUNDRED GB every month have not been "screwed". Neither even have I, and I haven't pulled down that amount. Lack of service NOW does not negate delivery of service PREVIOUSLY. Rant against MWeb if you must, but be fair about it.

I'm not anti-mweb - I'm anti the way things are handled when they have extended downtimes that I'm funding.

You obviously have a reading problem - I quoted him, who has paid for an EXPENSIVE capped account, and now can't use it. I didn't mention ANYTHING about uncapped there. So take your "absolute rubbish" and shove it.

Wow, people can get REALLY rude and cranky without their interwebz :D Hehehe! Rant away, but this last comment of yours has got you added to my ignore list :) Cheers.
