Mweb Guy - Am I reading this Ad correctly

http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/2/Business/HotDeals/4MbpsADSL.aspx

MWEB Business offers various broadband services. While we strongly recommend an uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled service:wtf:, we realize that businesses have different connectivity requirements. Ask our sales consultants which solution would best meet your business' requirements.

If I come back to MWEB on this account you will NOT throttle .....?

And why does your Ad say CLEARLY unthrottled, but in your conditions you include this

"Throttling is a bandwidth management practice to manage Internet traffic – a user’s connection speed may be reduced based on usage patterns and usage history.'

No seriously - can you clear up the confusion here please ............ It can only be one or the other and I am keen to understand what I would get on the business package.

Hi TEXTILE GUY

Our full on Business packages are not throttled. Send me your contact details and I'll arrange for a consultant to contact you.

They did? I understood the premium had a lower contention ratio, didn't know it was meant to be unthrottled?

it has been specifically advertised as "unthrottled" - this description still appears in the meta data for the web pages (with the consequence that if you google "unthrottled adsl south africa" MWEB comes to the top of the adverts) and they informed the press that the product is unthrottled which manifested in several articles carrying the message of unthrottled being the benefit of premium over the cheaper throttled products. Naspers owned News24 stands by its story on the product.

So yes the issue is that premium uncapped has been presented as a no throttling uncapped product and now they on the basis of usage commence throttling.

Well in the AdSense ads, I'd prefer relying on Pagerank selected pages but they should change the meta data/words on AdSense.

So.... i have been fairly out of tune with what exactly has been transpiring in the Mweb circles, as my poor little 2Mb line has always been fairly trustworthy. I could run torrents at 130-160kb/s and still have a nice and stable 210ms to play online games with. Then the news of throttling and shaping came into play and i didnt think much of it at first, but i did notice that of my 2 transfers that were active, none would ever go above 30-40kb/s. I still thought thats ok... guess im waiting a little longer, even though its not what im paying for, but at least my gaming goes on. Last night though things started going iffy. All my online gamer friends complained of latency issues across the board with mweb and something wasnt right. This is getting a little annoying now. Could anyone confirm this?

Hi TheRidDlerX

I have had a looked into you specific account and I can see that your account has been speed limited.

Interesting. Do you still have my details from.... PMs earlier this year? And could you maybe give me some feedback on why? I cant imagine my gaming and odd downloading on my 2Mb line to have grieved anyone.

Thanks

The calculation is done over a 30 day rolling window and is updated on a daily basis.

I can not see your Pm's from earlier this year.

I receive so many that I have to consistantly make some space in order to receive new Pm's

What's the difference between Capping, Soft Capping, Speed Limiting, Shaping and Throttling

What's the difference between Capping, Soft Capping, Speed Limiting, Shaping and Throttling

My views:
Capping refers to the process of introducing a specific quantity of data which results in access being denied if the cap is exceeded. The norm is for a cap to run on a monthly basis but it can be any period.

Soft capping refers to capping which does not result in an absolute denial of access but which leads to an impairment of access. Soft capping can also be a user elected capping mechanism.

Speed limiting is any mechanism that results in a user not enjoying the full capacity of the network available to them - shaping and throttling are both speed limiting mechanisms.

Shaping is the process of prioritizing certain traffic above other traffic either on a port or user basis. Shaping often has the effect of reducing consumption and "slows down" the connection (so it is a speed limiting technique).

Throttling is reducing the available resources for connectivity.

The critical issue is whether the provider of an uncapped offering that has a shaping or fair use policy complies with ISPA stated and industry standard norms and/or their own representations on the product that they are offering.

MWEB's lower priced products have specifically indicated that they are "throttled" and "heavily shaped" and not suited to download and p2p applications. They specifically marketed (and continue to market) their premium products as "unthrottled" but they are alleging that an undefined usage figure being exceeded (a soft cap effectively) makes the user liable

I wouldn't have a problem with an ISP saying we throttle heavy users (defined as x) if conditions pqr exist. I prefer Afrihosts increasing shaping as capacity requires and their presentation of heavy usage according to % of capacity used over time.

I strongly suspect (and have for a long time) that there is a small pool of abusive users who are circumventing network shaping mechanisms of different ISPs and reselling services who landed themselves on MWEB for a while some of whom are now on Afrihost. The difference is that MWEB alleged abuse on the basis of data consumption - contravening their marketing statements etc ... - rather than on circumventing network management tools and causing harm to the network. Identifying actual network abuse (sending spam, circumventing network management etc ...) and establishing intent is a lot more difficult than simply crying fowl on the basis of people using the network. MWEBs problem is that their network management seems to have lost any dynamic edge (retrenching or failing to hire skilled technicians?)
