Good stuff Mephisto, seems there was a bit of an oversight with Durban access to the news servers :o, it was flagged and fixed first thing this morning :)

I can survive a day or two when it comes to downloading or gaming ..... anything past that and the cranky grandma in me comes out :p

I have to say after all the Seacom and Sat3 problems everything is working perfectly and my line is downloading at full speed in the nights and my gaming is running perfectly again.

Awesome, that's great to hear. :D

Hi Tman

This is a question which hasn't been asked in quite a while, which means the system is working :)

We don't look at one specific factor, but rather our abuse team use multiple criteria to detect ongoing patterns of abusive behavior and then send out warnings if they feel that it's appropriate. We use a 3 strike system, meaning that you would have to receive 3 warnings within a certain time period, after which we will terminate the service if you decide not to move to a more appropriate product.

We have been accused of having vague rules at times, but the truth is this works very well for us and it means that the vast majority of our customer base, who really don't even know that there is such a thing as abuse can continue using the product without having to worry about rolling thresholds, or any other such confusing and frustrating 'gig watching' policies.

The amount of warnings that we issue on a monthly basis is a tiny fraction of our customer base and an interesting statistic I just calculated: We currently have somewhere in the region of an 85% success rate on customers complying with first warnings and not prompting any further action from us, which I think is great! :)

Hope that addresses your concerns.

Still. It leaves a very sour taste in my mouth, the notion that an uncapped product that already throttles torrents and the like should need this (iirc, it says somethign about unattended downloading in the FUP?).

I completely understand if people are bypassing the shaping, but if I got a warning for downloading torrents at night or something, I'd be super pissed.

Does Mweb Home Uncapped, shape VPN traffic? Is UK traffic routed via SAT3 or SEACOM?

I really do get where you're coming from copacetic. Personally I can't say I'm overly fond of the need for a policy myself, but it is a necessary evil as you simply have to have some sort of mechanism in place for dealing with abuse.

Also knowing that services in South Africa are often measured against international standards I'm quite proud of the fact that by international standards the acceptable usage policy we apply on our uncapped products is actually very relaxed and I personally believe that we offer the most freedom to our users in terms of the other methods of enforcing fair usage that are currently employed.

Kind Regards
Will

I agree and you guys are more than fair , don't let a small portion of complainers leave you guys feeling bad
cause we do appreciate the efforts you guys put in.

Like Mephy said I can do with out a day or 2 of gaming and downloading and thankfully you guys don't exceed that

I am of the firm opinion that you guys are giving your customers as much as you can, and working with restraints imposed by powers well beyond your control. I'm sure if it was financially viable, you'd happily create a totally unshaped network for all, right?

Still, if it ever happened I'd still be annoyed. :D

Hi Off-The-Chart

Send me your MWEB details and a trace route and ping test to a local and international site so that I can have a look into this for you.

Regards
MWEB GUY

We have a triple play of great news today, with our 10GB national backbone now fully operational between JHB, Durban and Cape Town, our Durban IP Connect link going live and a significant increase in our international bandwidth!

Impressive - congrats. I would hate to even know what a 10GB link costs! :)

I like the new DBN IPC, but not the hops it takes to get outside the country for my gaming
