MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Good Morning Everyone

There seems to be a small network problem in our Cape Town data centre, which is affecting access to www.mweb.co.za and a few other services; our engineers are attending urgently.

OKay, I've also got a HUGE problem with my MWeb line.

I've got the 1MB all inclusive, but my download speeds are HORRIBLE. I'm getting an average of 5kB/s when downloading from nVidia's website, and even less than that from the Folding@Home website.

Good Morning DarkStarZN, please provide me your MWEB account details via direct message and I will investigate this for you.

^ MWEB Guy just indicated above that the 1mbps all-inclusive accounts will cost R488 after the Telkom upgrade, so that's more than the current R329 / R349 for the uncapped 384kbps all-inclusive. This is what I'm trying to clarify...

I don't think MWEB is pushing the 384kbps uncapped to 1mbps uncapped free.

Yes, agreed. But the point I'm making is that that is an option if you don't want to be "forced" to pay more... Telkom's free upgrade is only (obviously) the line portion. MWEB is not offering free uncapped upgrades from 384kbps to 1mbps.

So there's not such thing as a free lunch :) Telkom's free upgrade is only worth something if we upgrade to 1mpbs with MWEB and there pay MWEB more :)

Hi Sabrewolfy

The difference is the all inclusive part. Our 384k Data only product will effectively cease to exist once everyone is upgraded on the 1st of June. However with all inclusive products we cannot force (nor would we want to) those customers to move to a 1mb product so the 384k all inclusive product will stay as it is, with a price reduction of R20-00.

You can of course opt to go to a 1mb all inclusive product, which is now R100-00 cheaper than it used to be.

Of course the future of 384k all inclusive is dependent on the outcome of any Telkom line speed adjustments, which we're all waiting for with bated breath :)

Hi All

The network problem we experienced in the Cape Town Data Centre has now been resolved. Please keep me posted if you are still experiencing any issues.

Your -0.0009765625MB mailbox is 100% full

message centre says my inbox is full , must be a bug there is no messages inside.

I have that one too!
So far my experience with Mweb uncapped isn't too bad, just a bad start getting it to work. Just so slow coming from CellC and going to 384kbps.
But holding thumbs that Telkom will up it to 1meg in July. :D

We are still restoring some mail servers. Please can you continue to monitor and keep me posted.

Thanks for the reply. I see now that the new pricing for the 1mbps uncapped all-inclusive is R100 cheaper than it was before, which is what I was trying to understand.

Any ideas on how accurate the "June 2012" date is for the Telkom ADSL speed upgrades?

So, our 4mb uncapped line at home got cancelled a few days ago for "abuse", seemingly without warning. Turns out that warnings had been sent to a dormant email account, although I suppose this is our fault for not checking.

Nevertheless, MWEB resent the warnings to an active email address and this is what they said:

"Your current ADSL usage pattern shows repeated instances of prolonged download sessions at line, or near line speeds which is placing an undue burden on our network and is not in keeping with our Acceptable Usage Policy."

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if we weren't circumventing shaping or any other restrictions, is it our fault that we were able to download at line speed? If MWEB's network is being burdened or taking strain, should they not be shaping us?

It is not like we were intentionally abusing the network. In fact, our bandwidth usage for the last 3 or 4 months were lower than last year's monthly usage, and we never received any warnings then.

Just very confused as to why our line got cancelled when MWEB had the ability to shape or throttle our traffic instead.

Can't disagree with this at all, if you were not bypassing the shaping, then this is the one scenario that would make MWEB's glory collapse in a ball of fire, to me.

Can we get some clarification about this perhaps?

Hi francoiswnel

Please can you PM me the MWEB account details to enable me to provide you more detail as to why you were disconnected.

Please note that we do have a 3 warning system in place before we disconnect our clients.

There are also ways of bypassing our shaper to ensure that you obtain line speeds when downloading, even though we might be shaping your account.

The onus is therefore on the client to ensure that they manage their account and that they comply with our AUP (acceptable usage policy).

That's all fine and well but shouldn't Mweb then give us a better definition of "prolonged download sessions"?

Our business lines were recently upgraded to 6mb. I notice file downloads from some sites run at full line speed despite the account being the 4mb uncapped account. What the line is primarily used for though is remote support via Splashtop which uses ports 6893, 6894 and 6895. Performance in this area is a bit flaky. Our average monthly usage is +- 70gb before the upgrade and around 120gb after the upgrade. What is MWEB's policy re the above and can a shaping policy be altered on a single account?

TIA

If I can't run torrents all the time, which are shaped, then I have an issue, personally. I don't do it all the time, but when I've needed something big, I've never gotten a warning, which is how I'd expect things to be.

I suspect the people complaining, are inadvertently (or purposefully) bypassing the shaping, and if that's the case, I have no issue.

But if it turns out someone is getting dumped because they left torrents running (which has not happened yet, as far as I know)...
