MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hey
Its a new patch for Shogun 2. Might be that the steam servers are just congested, but last night the game was updating at 100k mark for most of the night, then this morning it just hovers around the 40k. So yeah, smacks of shaping :p

I am currently on the 1meg line uncapped trial and have a few questions (before I take the plunge) for the guys and gals that's on this package.

  1. How badly is nntp shaped during office hours?
  2. How is nntp shaped after hours / over weekends?
  3. Is it worth it to go for an Astraweb (or similar) account, instead of using MWEB's news server? Is there a speed difference between the two?
  4. How is normal downloads (http) shaped during the day / over weekends / after hours??
  5. How is gaming on this package? Mostly console gaming online.
  6. What about Youtube?

I have skimmed this thread, but there is just too much to go through :D, so your help would be very much appreciated with the above.

For my 1Mb:
1. I get about 90-105KBps via news.Mweb.co.za or fullspeed on international (I'm happy with the 90-105 since I know Mweb is looking out for me by shaping my downloads).
2. Fullspeed.
3. Nah. I have xsusenet's free account as a backup for older files.
4. Fullspeed 24/7
5. I have 210ms pings on LoL and <50ms to any local game.
6. Pretty good. 1Mbps is just just fast enough to stream 360p so it buffers now and then, but I get 105KBps on it.

Can't help you with the first three, but I found the last three to perform exceptionally well for me, even during the day. Also on 1meg uncapped.

Steam will be shaped as this falls under the p2p protocol. Bear in mind that our network is shaped dynamically based on the load on the network.

1. i get a full speed 24/7
2. full speed 24/7
3. no just use news.mweb.co.za and free xsusenet account
4. full speed
5. dont know about consoles, bf3 pc ping is 8ms on most servers
6.seems ok sometimes sluggish.

Just upgraded to 4mb from a 1mb, it sucks, latency is very dodgy in wow, smooth 200ms on 1mb, websites are also timing out etc, is mweb aggressively shaping 4mb? Shouldn't your consultants advise this before allowing me to upgrade? What is the downgrade process? Is there a cancellation of upgrade window?

Hi saffakanera

What are the pings you get in WoW? Is it only with WoW or other games as well?

Regarding the websites, are they local or international? Can you send me traceroute results along with the MWEB account details via PM in order for me to look into it from our side.

Sounds like your line maybe not stable at 4mbps.

PS; MWeb Guy, I'm on leave so, at home today, and torrents look like they running very reasonable even now at 10am business hours. Was running at near full speed last night. The dynamic shaping on MWeb must probably be one of the most advanced in use in the world...

Thanks hereticangel and froot.

Most as expected. Also using xsusenet account currently as back-up.

/me smacks MWEB Guy upside the head for getting it wrong :D This is not correct guys, steam downloads would get the same priority as any normal http download - it is not p2p.

Hi,
This is a question for the Mweb guy - I have recently signed up for the R199.00 package on a 1meg line - I do download torrents, I would like to know how much gig's I could download in a month that would be deemed as fair, I was with Afrihost over December & when I went over 40 gig I was slowed down so much for the rest of the month it wasn't worth it & I don't want this to happen with Mweb :)

Sorry guys for the confusion, next time I will have my coffee earlier :)

Awesome feedback reactor :) The kit we have deployed is pretty state of the art stuff, but also our network boys have had 2 years experience at this now since we launched uncapped (hard to believe) and I think they have done a damn fine job of getting the balance right, in terms of prioritizing the important stuff while still allowing the downloaders to get their fix.

Yes, all kudos to you guys.
I'm able to max out my line with ie ftp/nntp and if I open my browser, those speeds shoot down to allow me to browse seamlessly.... that's a ^5 right there.

We don't throttle based on usage. Just keep your usage to reasonable levels, come up for air between downloads and remember the Internet will still be there next month so you don't need to back it up locally :D

That's why I don't even really like to call it shaping anymore - it's more accurate to call it QoS :) I've left downloads running while playing BF3 and everything just sorts itself out.
