MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Prioritising certain protocols has the same effect as throttling. YouTube is very awkward on MWEB any time of the day. MWEB promised that we would not see much shaping after hours, but in reality they have a system which has no room to relax the shaping and it is done around the clock. Occasionally they add more capacity, which gives us a bit of a breather, but this soon disappears. Whether new signups are taking it or MWEB is switching the shapers on and off to deflect criticism is debatable.

Hooray for conspiracy theories. Doesn't sound like you have an axe to grind at all.

Prioritising certain protocols only has "the same effect as throttling" on low priority protocols. Normal priority protocols aren't negatively affected, so it isn't the same as throttling at all.

Actually, it helps high-priority protocols. Since the bulk stuff has a lower priority, there's effectively more bandwidth available for high-priority traffic than there would've been if it had to contend with everything on a level playing field.

Well-managed QoS is a good thing IMO, as long as there's enough total bandwidth available.

Hi MWEB

I signed up for a 4mb line on the 16th April. On Astraweb at a time slot of around 10pm was getting close to 200KB/s.
Today during the day I was getting 50KB/s (normally +- 80KB/s) but now I am getting only +- 40KB/s.
Surely that is not on???

I know my line is not an issue - I downloaded linux mint at about 8pm via http - and was getting round about 350 - 400 KB/s on average.

I then switched to my backup capped account - and on Astraweb was getting on average 320 - 400 KB/s.
Surely that ain't right? During the day I can understand (80 KB yes not 50KB) but at 11pm 40KB/s just don't cut it for me.

what's up?

Dude please just see what you can download in a day and stop worrying about speed. During the day it is slow and into the night as well sometimes but generally you can pull 10gb+ in a day.

If you are not happy with that go pay 2.5k for business uncapped. You will get 40 in the day sometimes as low as 18. Just how it is. You can go try those 10-30 gb uncapped from certain companies if you want.

Hi MWEB
but at 11pm 40KB/s just don't cut it for me.

Then cancel your subscription - It's not changing anytime soon.

The rest of us are more than happy with what we are getting ;)

I'm suprised people are still asking these questions , as they have been answered a gazillion times by the MWEB rep and co-forumites. Read the thread.

Dearest MWB

The other ISP's are dropping their subscribers like flies. Quick! Shorten the "ramp" to get more bandwidth before they join us! Seriously though, they're coming fast and furious.

Regards,

PS: off peak downloads are dragging...

you misunderstand me. I am not moaning about the service. Just comparing the benchmarks from my 1st few days with yesterday. I am happy with mweb - and I am coming from Screamer - so I appreciate MWEB's QOS.
Incidentally, a download I started at 11pm ran at at average of 340KB/s. So I guess its all about scheduling better.

I have been reading the threads and dont remember reading anything about newsgroups being so slow. Rapidshare - yes, Torrents - yes.

Hi All,

Additional capacity upgrades on the MWEB network have certainly been scheduled, however what we want (when we want it) and what our incumbent telco (& other 3rd party infrastructure providers) can deliver are not always in sync. We are pushing them to places they've never been before, revolution often comes with some growing pains.

MWB.

@MWEB - Ever heard of contingency plans? This brings me back to my point or rather statement I made ..which now...appears to hold true. PLEASE disagree with me ... I beg you...as my statement is based on fact.

MWEB - as other ISPs - are very good at PR mumbo jumbo and taking the focus off the actual problem and taking accountability for issues. I think this should be a matter for ICASA, ASA and the Competition Tribunal?

MOAR!

You know you want the business :D

@Kosmik - I couldn't agree with you more! They very easily, sign you up, take 2months payments insetad of one, give you some bogus T&C that is not even relevant to a UNCAPPED service and then ...when you threaten to cancel, they say "sure, but we holding that two months payment"

@MWEB - You have been made AWARE of the problems by BOTH your USER BASE and TELCO but yet you still keep signing up subscribers...yes, i know its business, revenue, etc ...but... don't think that the "problems" need to be resolved and network stablised first before bringing more problems? Stop blaming Telco, 3rd party, blah...blah...blah... you asked for our opinions, you did the surveys, you received the information.... NOW DO SOMETHING!!!

Hold on a sec Brad, they are merely saying that they need to speak to their upstream provider about provisioning more. This is understandable as even on a per Gbps model with use of cable, the upstream provider has to have the capacity to forward our traffic on. With the communications revolution of the new data cables, this could be a very valid point. It does however also boad well that as Mweb have grabbed the market here with their new business model so can companies in other countries get a much larger portion of the pie now providing upstream capabilities to our companies here. But a lot of foreign companies have a very warped perception of done here so they might be unprepared for the demand.

Either way, BOTH Mweb and thier upstream provider/s must expand for new capacity. If one provider is not enough, I'm sure there will be many more that will take the business. Mwebs model is working, most folks are happy with the shaping taking place and the quality received. Keep it at that level and you will have the alrgest customer base in the country. Start to fail, and those that have dropped to save a bit of money will return to the more expensive accounts for conveniance over price.

Nice job guys, keep it up.

would it be possible to sign up using only credit card or EFT? I'm not comfortable with signing any kind of debit order.

Thanks MWEB. I appreciate the fact that our queries and concerns are being responded to.
