MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Without trawling the 1621 replies, can anyone tell me the newsgroup settings, and what a decent app is for accessing newsgroups these days..... OH - and is it any good?

Well it appears as though neither Afrihost nor MWEB can provide me with decent uncapped services (for my needs) as it's now 9pm and neither a torrent nor newserver download will exceed 8kb/s. Thought I'd be fine after ridding myself of Afrihost...apparently not :(

@xrapidx: news.mweb.co.za, grabit and not too bad

@iwojima: before you worry too badly about it, what are you using to download? Keep in mind that torrents are shaped pretty heavily and there are now tons of people shifting over to mweb.

that's right, i agree the speed is the pits, I'm crawling at 10 kbs (MWEB)

A combination of Azureus/Vuze and Alt.Binz (using news.cheapnews.eu paid for newserver)

I can understand the traffic issues (esp. during the day), but I see some individuals are not struggling too much at all on MWEB in the evenings...particularly 4mb users. Just fearing what the cause for inconsistency is. Wouldn't pay too much attention if everybody was in the same boat.

@iwojima: People getting good speeds are probably using various data hosting sites other than rapidshare (which is shaped) and not using torrents (which are shaped) or news (which I think is shaped)
@xrapidx: O_o That's bizarre. You using the same grabit? Thing with a dog and an icon that looks like a yellow bone? I don't even have a place to see licensing.

@ MWB
I have a 4096 ADSL line with Telkom. They are my ISP(unfortunately). 4 Gig Cap on an unshaped service....
When I upgraded the line a couple of years ago, I used to get the full speed. In the last year, after 6 reported service faults and dismal service from Telkom, my line was downgraded to 3 Megabit and now a week ago after being ADSL less for 16 days, to a 2 Megabit line. They say I live too far from the exchange(2 kilometres in Melkbosstrand...go figure). So where will it stop? Dial Up?
My question... Will MWEB be able to get the full 4096 service back for me on a business account if I transfer to MWEB as an ISP?
And...Will I ever have to deal with Telkom again? I don't think my level of patience will allow that any longer...
Thanks...

PS
I have sent an email to MWEB as well..

To all who are complaining about slow speeds, please read some pages back where MWEB says that they are moving over the capped accounts to uncapped, so network capacity is less than normal.
There was something about more users = more capacity needed to be added, but that is pure logic.

Other than getting the new inventor(student license), I am not going to whore the service in the day any more, she works best when not too many people are using her at once.

MWB also mentioned that shaping on their network is dynamic, as they need to add more capacity all the time as more users sign up. So people should expect things to slow down then fasten up again, pretty much all the time from day to day.

Personally I still find this mweb account a great service, definitely the best for its price. The IS-based accounts won't be beating this anytime soon.

Hi Beagle,

We can try our best using the influence we have with Telkom, however the national ADSL access network is ultimately theirs and therefore we could not guarantee a service that will sync at 4096 stable & error free.

MWB.

Hi Tinuva,

100% correct. The current performance dynamics experienced are a momentary phase during the planned/scheduled ramp up of our network.

MWB.
