MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

@Mweb: Any chance of local traffic being given a higher priority than international (since it's cheaper for you guys) so that DC hubs could be looked into? Would save a ton on bandwidth and would probably alleviate a lot of stress on the network if they worked nicely.

That would be incredible! A DC Hub, that actually works! Now we're talking!

Not entirely true - if you compare network saturation between newsgroups and torrents newsgroups have way less traffic....

But torrents thrive on traffic, a news server can only support a certain ammount of connections healthely before performance starts to degrade, its hardly just about traffic

Official free self regulated centres where people can do exactly what they want to? In this country? Just after RICA got enforced? Pipedreams

then it would make good economic sense to shape their own news server separately, and more leniently.

Hi Gatecrasher & AntiThesis,

You both make sense regarding on-net/local vs. international BW and we will be constantly re-evaluating the situation as the network matures ... we havent even been at it for a full month yet. The one local anomoly which skews things a bit is the crazy economics of BW pricing in SA where IPC/local costs are not vastly cheaper than international.

MWB.

That sucks - I think it's always been an assumption that local bandwidth costs much less than Intl. Actually - local BW should surely be close to free since all the infrastructure has been paid for?

We'll all be patient I'm sure - at least we're able to use our internet and browsing is still lightning fast. I mean let's face it, our goals (ours and yours) are:

1) We want to be able to move as much traffic as we want to. Finish. No caps, no problems.
2) You want a lot of happy customers and not to end in the place where Afrihost is right about now (mobs of angry clients)
3) You want a reasonable profit ;)

If we can all hit those three goals without pissing each other off this should be a good partnership.

Yeah, my HTTP download speed has dropped drastically. I am only getting 10-15 KB/s on a 384 line whereas yesterday I was averaging around 30-35 KB/s.

I've used 56GB this month, have a 4Mbps line, and I'm only getting 512Kbits down, but upload is normal.

Okay, here is my latest speedtest.net on a 512:

I'm connecting from the Eastern Cape, so I would presume I go from PE, to CT to JHB to world... Perhaps there is a problem in CT? Any ideas? Also the ping is higher than I've ever experienced:

Regards;

Trottling here we come. My download speed on rapidshare is now only 35kbps on a 4meg line, and http 75kbps, about 20% of what is was yesterday.:(

I thought that these speeds would not last. Has Mweb finally started using the brakes? Good luck Mwebers.

don't think its throttling, the mweb rep has said they busy with upgrades etc so during this period speed will fluctuate (sp) but should return to normal once the upgrades have been completed ... ofcourse i stand to be corrected though

OMS okes, just chill FFS. I just loaded in with an axxess account i have and it is just as slow.

Really this is just issues on their side and not throttling, well i hope i am right :D

I'm really not having browsing issues, and I have Newsbin going at 100 KB/s in the background, which is quite acceptable during the day. (We are synced at 3072 here at the office, for what it's worth.)

GOD.

There could just be a problem? "oh no, i've dropped speed today, better get out the pitch fork, and lanterns, times to kill me an ogre!" Okes are seriously touchy around here.
