MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

What time (approx) do the floodgates open? I'm currently getting 15 kB/s :(
Hi Smooth Criminal,

Our shaped service does not work that way. The avaliablity of excess capacity for use by non-priority traffic (e.g. torrents, news, rapidshare etc) is dependant on the demand load for priority traffic by the majority of our user base. Thus your performance should steadily increase during the course of the evening as priority demand decreases.

MWB.

Hi Tinuva,
The current performance dynamics experienced are a momentary phase during the planned/scheduled ramp up of our network.

Ah! So the current slow speeds are just temporary?

Cool, thanks for clearing that up :) Also, I assume that the planned upgrades will occur as the subscriber base grows, as opposed to a fixed date?

Okay, so when can one expect the next upgrade, or is it too soon to tell?
Hi hambone,

We prefer to do first, talk after. I will say there is 'stuff' happening over the course of the month.

My apologies, I do struggle keeping it in my pants. Thanks again for keeping up appearances here and on the other thread(s). Seriously, what better way to keep the techies at bay by having a rep checking here regularity?! Stoked, customer service peeve has been placid for the past month. Hey! Did MWEB have a celebration for the first month of Uncapped? Upload pictures!

Question to the reps on the news server, would it not be better to allow more connections to your own server? or upgrade it?
I could only get max 2 connections at a time forcing me to buy an astraweb account.
Now all my traffic is international whereas ALL my traffic would've been local.

Damnit. I'm being forced to re-evaluate Mweb - how sad is that?

The evil, megalomaniac corporation seems to actually kick a far amount of ass. Much kudos.

Don't tell the hippies...they like having someone to hate.

Excellent question! Mweb could save a bundle on international bandwidth by jacking up their news server. Could save us a bundle too.

Thanks MWEB,
I do understand the problem that you would have with Telkom.
They just do not seem at all interested in helping the man in the street, so as a corperation, you might stand a better chance.
Anyhow, I am still waiting for a reply from MWEB Business on the email I sent yesterday afternoon. Must be a busy time for them.....

Telkom is always worse, MWEB at least does not undermine other ISP's directly

Hi drukkie & Gatecrasher,

While we believe we've put in a relatively powerful news system, it has finite limits and pales in comparison to the major global players.

Our news service is provided as an 'as-is' convenience to a certain limited segment of our customers which means the required investment to (even partially) match the big player's capabilites is not viable.

We will certainly be monitoring the situation to see if the viability changes.

MWB.

@xrapidx: news.mweb.co.za, grabit and not too bad

@iwojima: before you worry too badly about it, what are you using to download? Keep in mind that torrents are shaped pretty heavily and there are now tons of people shifting over to mweb.

Don't forget to install quickpar

Thanks for the reply.

Even without doing anything to enhance the server itself, if MWeb finds that the bandwidth bottleneck on their uncapped accounts is centered more on international capacity rather than on local capacity, then it would make good economic sense to shape their own news server separately, and more leniently.

The problem with all the new news server users is they only saturate things and make speeds slower ;(
I'ts actually been getting slower all year, the month just before the uncapped hit it literally stopped working for a lot of people in the last week.

Not entirely true - if you compare network saturation between newsgroups and torrents newsgroups have way less traffic....

@Mweb: Any chance of local traffic being given a higher priority than international (since it's cheaper for you guys) so that DC hubs could be looked into? Would save a ton on bandwidth and would probably alleviate a lot of stress on the network if they worked nicely.
