I am not one to complain but this has been getting worse as I do not mind shaping during the day as stated, but I am being heavly shaped late at night. I have a Telkom ISP account that gives me a constant 42kps when I connect with it and as soon as I swap over to my MWEB I get 14kps speeds(Local downlaod).
When I started with the R219 Mweb account as I was one of the first and got constant 42kps downloads. Then I slowly saw the service degrading during the day (being shaped) which is fine as I get 10-20kps speeds, but what I have a problem with is the fact that it has been more than a week that at night I do not go over 15-20kps and I have tested other accounts where I get 36-42kps to be sure it is MWEB.

Why is this so and can it be a technicality on my side or am I indeed being shaped after hours?
I loved the service so far, mweb is never down, good clients care but just this shaping after hours is bothering me tad bit as the MWEB consultant that sold me the product said I will get full speed after hours unless of course the networking is taking strain which is fine… but if so will I ever get 36-42kps speed again or is this going to be the average connection I have to deal with?

When I wake up I see downloads at 2-3kps some times, then I swap over on telkom and bam full speeds!! This is direct downloads they give me full speed so it is my mweb acc shaping it I'm 99% sure. This is not torrents...

Will I be able to get normal speeds again, is there some thing wrong with my acc?
any advice?

Thx Mweb rep.

+1. I have been experiencing the same thing. More shaping than not at night... While I get the whole shaping argument it would be nice to get line speed most evenings, which on a 348kbps line is not asking to much...

Hi Ultradian,

The situation should improve, please see my post here .... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...cial-Q-amp-A&p=3807931&viewfull=1#post3807931

BTW: If you use a capped account from MWEB it will also exhibit the same high-speed burst performance (was verifying this during business hours today).

Hi MWEB

Thanks for answering our questions here.

What do you consider a reasonable download speed on 384 during the day?
In other words: What are you aiming for?

6KB/s on Rapidshare is a bit harsh. Edit: Now it's 4KB/s.

Or should I go back to dial-up? I used to have a free ABSA account and paid Telkom R7 for the whole WE:(

Have to add: Everything other than Rapidshare rocks.

Moo moo moo cow Rapishare, can't see any rapidshare files being very time-critical to home users but maybe i'm just pedantic about getting what you pay for :)

I have to say speeds are getting worse, the most i can get out of FTP has dropped fron 37KBps earlier this month to 29KBps, p2p is maxing out at 5KBps

I have been watching how ppl complain all the time. I have been paying around R1600 for 512 uncapped for the last 2 yrs and now I am paying around R500 and still getting speeds higher than 52 that i was getting 24hrs a day on the higher rate. What do you guys want? Blood!!!!! I am very happy with the service or speed I am getting for the price that I am paying.

Hi MWEB

Do you also throttle 384k accounts when they reach 15GB? if not what throttling do you have on a 384k account if you have any?

I agree. So you can't download full speed 24/7, boo hoo. If the shaping isn't working for you, pay up for business class. I'm getting a much better all round service than I had on the throttled Axxess Express. And for half the price.

Hi Playing,

Well it depends on what/how you're downloading during the day. Rapidshare is definately classified as P2P (non-priority traffic) and as such will be constrained during work hours as the non-priority BW pool is flexed downards to accomodate the peak demand from priority traffic e.g. normal browsing/mail etc.

After hours (esp late evening/early morning) the situation for non-priorty traffic improves as priority demand subsides and the BW pool capacity flexes upwards. This however does not mean contention on the non-pri BW pool subsides too much. Unfortunately single threaded applications like Rapidshare are at a disadvantage in this contendend enviroment in comparison to more aggressive multi threaded application like torrents & news.

As I've mentioned the 384/512 non-pri throughput situation is a seperate issue which under review/investigation.

And just because its cheaper means people shouldn't get what they pay for?

hehehe u could argue that we ARE getting what we pay for

Well - if I get a 80% discount on a car - I'm still gonna expect it to do what its designed to do. Which is where the consumer protection act is going to rock.

But this isn't a debate I'm going to do here :) I'm happy with my MWEB connection atm.

First you will have to find out what it was "designed to do". I believe that the design is "unlimited access to the internet, in a dynamically contended bandwidth pool", not "unlimited access at full line speed". Both a Ferrari and a Getz is a car, but they won't give you the same level of performance. And a Getz and a Mercedes is not going to give you the same level of comfort and amenities, even if they have similar performance.

And, like you, I am also happy with my MWeb connection ATM.

hahaha at best this is a car advertised as a Ferrari and designed as a Getz
