MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

When they started the uncapped the normal business hours was normal business hours, by 19:00 we were flying full speed, since last week it became bad but today it is a joke.
Wonder how many people are running usenet and torrents from 6 trying to squeeze the bandwidth pipe for all it's worth

I'd like to pick out some of your quotes, though you don't mention where in the MWEB Web page Terms it says these things?? (link?).
That's 2 pages' worth of response to your question,118 more pages in this topic, gogogo

[*]In reality MWEB are throttling nearly all the time. Just try it at 2 in the morning.
You work for MWeb to be sure of this or just some observations?
[*]MWEB said their product was "ideal for games", and then when we tested it, they removed that
from their website.
T&C Can be changed by providers at will
[*]Ideal for video steaming. Oh yeah! Anyone tried YouTube on 384?
Youtube is terrible on any kind of 384 shaping /no surprises

You can achieve a big load by downloading anything. If we all click update on any Adobe package it would do the same. MWEB have realised that people would use something that affected their cap and throttled it without declaring when or by how much. In fact they mislead us by saying after-hours which in reality is "whenever we feel like it". The average user would assume after-hours is around 6pm and that all contentious download venues would be normal after that time. Even on weekends at 3am in the morning things are not normal.

If you are happy with that situation, then fine. However many people signed up believing the words of the CEO. If MWEB wants to change the terms ala AfriHost, then they are doing it after they have our money. It may be the 'best' of the bunch, but that still doesn't make it right.

The way P2P torrents, etc. work is very different to simply downloading a single file over HTTP or FTP.

This is typically done during peak hours and not when things are quieter ..
We encourage power users to schedule their activities during off-peak times,..
Non-priorty protocols (such as P2P) will perform much better during off peak times when the network has excess capacity.

<drivel snipped>

Cancel your uncapped account and return to the capped option then. It's not possible to simply "plug in" gigabits of bandwidth overnight. I'm QUITE sure MWeb is aware of the situation. I'm QUITE sure they are working on it. They opened up the market so I hardly think they are happy to let uncapped ADSL collapse at their feet. If you don't like the service, cancel.

This constant moaning and whining here is really tiresome. For the amount they charge, the uncapped account is a good deal. Think back a year and compare what you are paying then and now and what you are getting for it. Be realistic and look at it objectively. Sheesh!

384 isn't ideal, so why does MWEB make it worse? Dialup is now faster, so after SUPER-SHAPING is it ADSL any more?

Answer:??

They are forcing us to download a video in order to watch it because streaming is far slower. Arguably that is going to make the contention worse for others.

Work for MWEB? No. I have used their service regularly in the early hours and can tell you it's just as slow.

I already swap over to a capped account (shaped) and can appreciate the speed differences when I need it.
We aren't talking about whether it is a "good deal" for you, but rather that MWEB have misled us.

So activate dial-up and pay Telkom for the duration of the call too. Or take this all up with MWeb directly. Or cancel your account. You're more than welcome to return to the expensive, capped service of last year.

I don't believe they have misled us at all. They have been open about everything. They started this thread. They monitor this thread and reply to questions. They have indicated that they are aware of the effects of shaping and are waiting on additional bandwidth. They've not cut anyone off or throttled anyone downloading hundreds of megabytes.

MWeb hates you and your family,my sympathy is with you
The truth hurts I guess.

If they are throttling Rapidshare and torrents into oblivion, then one could say it's quite difficult to abuse the service.

I was looking for a more considered solution (involves thought). Like not shaping 384 much?

So you have a problem with MWeb because they have ensured that their service cannot be abused? :wtf:

Sorry, I'll try really hard to think now ... oooh ... no, not happening I'm afraid. <sigh> The MWeb rep. has already indicated in this thread that they are looking at shaping on the 384kbps service <sigh>. Maybe go back and read all 1800+ posts. Too much thought for me today though. I'm done. I'm very grateful that you are doing all the thinking for all of us. Saves us the effort.

I could make sure you are never abused. Chastity belt sound comfy? lol

Let's look deeper. Off-peak generally means out of business hours. Businesses are VAST uses of bandwidth. One would think that once these users are gone the bandwidth is cheaper and more plentiful. So why does MWEB continue throttling at 2-3AM?

Also, if you are selling an ADSL product, you can't turn it into dialup - that's just crazy! It is not what we bought.

Afrihost II.
From a PR standpoint, close, yes.

However they have come from different angles.
  • AH implements throttling at a fixed amount (changed from terms stated at the outset).
  • MW implements throttling all the time (changed from how it was at the outset).

Just switched to MWEB 4mb uncapped. Too soon to have any opinion but have tried to use their news server with grabit and am not having any luck. Is it down or am I screwing something up? I just changed the server details from the IS ones to news.mweb.co.za at 119. But it won't connect. Anyone got any ideas?

Tanya35, for a brand new member you sure do seem to know the ins and outs of every internet system, suggesting that you have extensive background knowledge in the IT world or you have another account on this forum and this is your pseudo-account.

This is not an accusation, in fact I find many of your comments very interesting and I am paying close attention... however I am a very factual person and I would like to know your background knowledge regarding this whole issue so that future posts by you leave less doubt in my mind.

Thanks :)

You're confused between throttling and shaping. I suggest that you read up on the differences before moaning.
