MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

HTTP. I assume XBOX LIVE will be hosted on a server and not P2P. I haven't tried P2P on MWEB.

k cool, thanks. Would also think so yes, or maybe they host it on a server and use p2p to share it? Like Blizzard does for their patches. (Not sure if it still works like that). They host their patches on servers but use p2p protocols so that you can download them... right? Correct me if I'm wrong. MWEB will then still shape that right?

Depends on the type of P2P or the port used I guess. However, it's pretty lame of Blizzard not to be able to afford server b/w for patches and demos. For HTTP DL's MWEB is king - I'm going at 435KB/sec atm.

Have to agree with you there, MWEB's HTTP downloads always hit max speed. Also currently downloading HTTP at max speed on my 512 line.

You must really have bad luck because I can do full speed 24/7. Are you sure that the server itself wasn't slow?

Don't know but don't think so. Never had problems downloading from Xbox Live before

After reading the first 10 pages of this thread, I've noticed there has been no definition of what "network abuse" actually constitutes...

The Mweb rep couldn't give us a defined threshold, but rather said when your activity starts to impede others ADSL service..

But many users have already said, how do we know what impedes the network and other users on the network?

From our side, how do we know what we do is considered abuse and what isn't?

How do I know, that if im not getting full http download speed, that some one isn't impeding me at this moment?

These questions have gone unanswered and this extremely vague concept of network abuse is unfair to the end users if we do not know what Mweb considers network abuse...

Consider an anology:

The government & other refuses to mention or specify what age limit is imposed for illegal alcohol consumption, so 15 year old's start drinking and get arrested. How should they know what they were doing was illegal? How should they know they should not have done it if the illegal limit was not specified?

How do we know how and when we impede anyone else's service?

The T&C's are very vague in this aspect, and do not represent the kind of information the end users should know to be able to fittingly and actively use this uncapped service effectively...

For an example where a simple 'network abuse' term does not work - the term is used to reference negatively affecting the mweb network and its other end users' service..

Would this mean that doing downloads during 12AM - 6AM everyday at full speed on a 4mbps connection, does not affect the service of other members as the majority (if anyone) is not actively using the internet at this time?

Would this mean that clocking up 1TB of data with the above method does NOT constitute network abuse (regardless of whether it is in fact, impossible)?

Would this mean that doing 20gb's worth of downloads during peak hours (whether or not it is possible), constitutes network abuse?

How can Mweb blame an end user for abusing their network when the guidelines for what this really is, has never been specified to us?

Sensou: It's not your job to worry about that, that's MWEB's job. Your job is to get the best you can from the system. Simple.

It's not my job but its certainly something on my concern, as a paying customer, I have the right to such information.

And how do you classify 'getting the best from the system' ?

What exactly does that mean? What is the 'best' out of the?

Nobody knows because this information hasn't been given to us, so please, don't reply to my question - the post was aimed at the Mweb rep, who can actually help those of us, who want to know how the service we pay for, works.

THANK YOU.

When you get a warning email from MWeb, then you'll know. They have to protect themselves and their users and so they include such a clause in the T&C. Shaping effectively prevents saturation of the service during peak hours.

Haha take a good look at those T&C's again, everything is worded in a way that protects themselves whilst giving them the ability to say it protects its users too...

Ensuring that the users are protected, would be to divulge the information we need to ensure we dont impede anyone else's service through Mweb.. - Does that not make sense?

I meant protecting users in the sense that shaping and acceptable usage is in place to ensure that everyone can always browse and access email. That's the idea at least.

My newgroup downloads hit max from late Saturday :) Haven't downloaded anything since yesterday afternoon - but I'll check again tonight.

In other words it's geared towards light browsing - full stop. Anything else is at the whim of Mweb. We don't need uncapped to do that.

Then why has heavy shaping been happening on weekends and in the morning after midnight?

Getting 410kb/s atm.

EDIT: Can't get to most international sites - which might be why the newsgroups are fast - anyone have this problem?

I'm not the MWeb rep. so I can't speak for MWeb. We've had this entire conversation before. Certain protocols have a higher priority, which is not to say that other protocols are blocked completely. Stream as much YouTube as you like, if you're prepared to buffer it. Listen to the radio as much as you like, at 60MB per hour, for 8 hours a day. That alone can be about 500MB per day. Uncapped will certainly help for that. Download as much as you like, if you're prepared to wait for it. This post and the ones following it one that and the next page show that some people have pulled down so many GB they have run out of stuff to download.

I'm not the MWeb rep. so I can't speak for MWeb. Ask the people in the thread I mentioned above who have run out of stuff to download. 60GB in a weekend speaks for itself.
