MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Its not a seacom issue cause IS is working fine this side.

I'm not the MWeb rep. so I can't speak for MWeb. We've had this entire conversation before. Certain protocols have a higher priority, which is not to say that other protocols are blocked completely. Stream as much YouTube as you like, if you're prepared to buffer it. Listen to the radio as much as you like, at 60MB per hour, for 8 hours a day. That alone can be about 500MB per day. Uncapped will certainly help for that. Download as much as you like, if you're prepared to wait for it. This post and the ones following it one that and the next page show that some people have pulled down so many GB they have run out of stuff to download.

I'm not the MWeb rep. so I can't speak for MWeb. Ask the people in the thread I mentioned above who have run out of stuff to download. 60GB in a weekend speaks for itself.

In your haste to defend all things Mweb, you seem to forget that the internet is about doing what we want WHEN we want. I don't want to have to wait for a time when things are quiet to do what the rest of the civilized world can do anytime. I didn't see that clause in the T&C and it's very very frustrating, especially now when INTERNATIONAL IS DOWN FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME!!

Then buy a 4MB unshaped business account with another two accounts with other ISPs for redundancy. And a satellite link for when all submarine cables go down at the same time. Don't buy a shaped home account on a slow line. If you read the T&C again carefully, I think you'll find that what you want is not covered by them.

Of course it is frustrating for everyone when the international link goes down. That's a separate issue to shaping however. And it's covered in the T&C too.

The link appears to be back up. I love these forums -- you get a blow-by-blow, second-by-second, byte-by-byte picture of the international link.

12:00 It's down! Evil MWeb! This sucks! I want what I paid for. This is so evil.

12:02 Oh, the link is back up now.

Yeah, internation just died although things I was connected to are still connected, just can't go to them again or anything else. Google still works though!...

Getting tired of all these problems :/

+1

We seem to be back up.

Its more the consistancy of the problems I've been having since seacom has been fixed that Im more concerned about. Keeps going down, keeps going slower than it should be (To a point where you can't actually browse at all) thats the problem for me anyways. Good thing I have patience and games to play though but this is not what I expected to pay for :D

Edit: It may be back, but its still laggingly horribly in certain area's which make it unusable.

I understand the shaping on P2P protocols, that HTTP, email and browsing must take higher preference...

This has been specifically explained for us to comprehend and bide by...no complaints there

But what has not, is the fact that 'network abuse' wont be tolerated...

As per my post on the previous page, I await an answer from the Mweb rep

I think I've raised some very valid points and as a client requesting more explanation for the product I pay for, I expect Mweb to answer

...Ensuring that the users are protected, would be to divulge the information we need to ensure we dont impede anyone else's service through Mweb.. - Does that not make sense?

Sensou, taking the risk of another cynical THANK YOU when I am actually trying to help you:
You do not have to worry about impeding on anyone else's service. That is MWEB's concern.
All you need to do, is find out what works best for you. MWEB is not going to tell you that.

My speed on mweb 4Mb have been horribly slow all times of the day!! April service was excellent but now i'm lucky to even get 100KB/s on http!!! This is pathetic!! There are the odd instances where i get 300KB/s but that's like waiting for a miracle!!
I know my lines not the problem nor my router..
I've tried dl from ati and nvidia, filehippo and various other http downloads and all are pathetically slow!! i may as well be paying for 384k.. At least i could then justify the speeds!!

And if they have down time or trouble with international could they at least just sent out an email!? i dont have time to check their site 24/7! And i doubt most other customers do...

I'm on a 384kb line and was with ICL-Eject, quite happy with 40KBps on cached stuff. Then I switched to an uncapped account at same ISP and the IS shaping kicked in..TERRIBLE!!! SHOCKING!
Am absolutely p**sed off with IS shaping. So yesterday I quickly got a Mweb uncapped on 384kb and now my grbt is struggling to do anything on the IS news.... realloy sux. mweb news also sux.

Am I missing something here?

Ye you probably won't connect to the IS news server at all since they do IP filtering, ie if you are not an IS client, then no IS newsserver. As for the mweb news server, the last time I tried it, it worked relatively well for anything from the last 30 days or so. If you want real newsservers with more than 600 days of rentention (that's right, you can get anything released in the last ~2 years) take a look at Astraweb. They are the only hosts that I know of that provide a per block service meaning you can buy 180GB of data and use it until it is depleted and then just top it up again. Definitely something I would recommend for someone who is doing less than 110GB per month (more than this and consider an unlimited package). If you are a heavy user, they also provide an unlimited service for a mere $15 pm...well worth it if you ask me...no need to worry about seeds...no need to worry about age of post...check it out http://www.news.astraweb.com/

@MWEB

I don't know if you're aware of the following thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...capped-speeds-(4mbps-account-.3mbps-downloads)

but some of us are experiencing dial up speeds for international traffic (browsing included) but our local speeds are normal.

Here's a post of mine quoted from the above thread:

So after 3 days of dial up speeds (even for web browsing) I decided to try do something about it (other than constantly restarting my router).

First I phoned Telkom and they checked their side and did a resync but that didn't help.

Then I phoned MWeb and they couldn't see a problem either. They did an account reactivation or something and told me to restart my router in 30 mins and try again. Still didn't fix it. I phoned them back and the guy basically said it's traffic and nothing we can do about it.

So after more than a month of normal speeds, why now and why only a couple of us? Surely dial up speeds at 11pm isn't purely down to traffic?

Here's some speedtest results (I'm on 512k uncapped and in JHB btw):

New York:

London:

JHB:

Cape Town:

Durban:

Is there anything we can do to try and fix this?

http performance

Hi All,

We are aware of the sporadic incidents of poor http performance (mainly downloads) and are working toward a resolution, however this may take some time as it involves external infrastructure not under our control.

This has nothing to do with international capacity or any kind of shaping but rather the layout/workings of the local Internet (hint: much of what you think is being downloaded internationally, actually isnt).

MWB.

Thanx for the feedback

I must say tonight for the first time I saw 400K+ again downloading a file. Very encouraging.

EDIT: :D ok that was short lived :D :D Hope you guys get to the bottom of this ASAP

Here is an image of an HTTP download on my 4mb line. Note that my router is synced at 4mb.

These are my line stats:

Downstream Upstream
4095 kbps 507 kbps

Line Attenuation
Down Up
51.5 db 25.0 db

Noise Margin:
Down Up
7.70 db 14.5 db

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4294/adslc.jpg

As you can see in the image, my line bursts higher then 4mb, the only problem is, it doesnt last very long. It bursts for a few seconds and then goes back down to 4mb speeds. I find it very interesting to watch my downloads go higher then my line is supposed to. Earlier I was excited to see my download burst up to 1.2MB/s and then shot back down to 470KB/s :D

Oh and apparently my exchange supports the new speed upgrades but hasnt been activated yet.

But what has not, is the fact that 'network abuse' wont be tolerated...

HAHAHA ive realised that basically this is a scare tactic that MWEB has dropped the ball on because no one realises they are being bullied, they want you too scared to use a lot of traffic...thats it

International http access slow as heck again on 384Kb uncapped Mweb line.

Damn, now the speedtest is pretty good for international, maybe it's just me but I've been struggling on and off for about 5 days with intermittent slow access to Google (mail, RSS reader, search, etc). Still happening right now.

Sometimes I have to click on an email 3-4 times and then it still takes about 5 minutes to open.

Another issue of a very high bill just after signing up. I subscribed to the 384Kb uncapped inclusive of Telkom ADSL line rental with Mweb at R349 per month. Line went live on 1st May and received SMS to say billing will commence in 3 days time. I have no issue with paying for two months in advance, however, instead of being billed R698 I was billed R1396, then credited R396, bringing the total owed to R1000. As I'd paid R545 in March for 6 months dialup I should still be in credit for 4 months of dialup access as I opted not to have optional dialup alongside my ADSL.

I opened a case with Billing via email on the 13th (actually 3 cases as there was a problem with the Mweb email portal which came up with a database error the first two times I tried to send the email) and all I've received to date (10pm Monday 17th) is a bill from the billing department as below. Mweb, please help as it looks like I've not only lost the money I had in credit for dialup, but have been billed an extra R302.

OPENING BALANCE 0.00
01/05/10 MWEB Uncapped 384-Includ 01/05/10 31/08/10 1224.56 171.44 1396.00 1396.00
01/05/10 TCIS99 Monthly Reversal 01/05/10 31/08/10 -347.37 -48.63 -396.00 1000.00
TOTAL BALANCE DUE: 1000.00

Thats the way they catch u, their billing system seems to be a purposely setup mess in practice for anyone daring to change their account.

Thats how my R30 extra became R90 extra for example
