Hi there

I've searched the forums for help and most of the threads was kind of old and dead so i decided to make a new one.

I have a 4mbps Mweb uncapped account and am struggling to download games through Steam. Right now (and all this morning and throughout the night) it's been crawling at speed less than 60KB/s. That is awfully slow for a 4mbps line!

Is Steam being shaped? Because I think it's pretty stupid to shape it as it's completely legal, unlike *most* torrents and if the game downloads fast I'm gonna play that game and the network will be free again. Whereas if it's shaped I'm gonna do some other downloads or stream videos until the download's done which will slow down the network further over a longer period! :P

In the other threads everybody's speed seems to be very good.

In Steam's settings > Downloads+Cloud, my download region is set to South Africa. (If it matters).

When I stream videos or do other downloads it goes at full speed. But Steam's is crawling!

Any ideas?

PS: What affects ping? If say, someone on my network streams a video @ 120KB/s and I want to play online will that affect my ping?

Thanks for any help :)

what's your download speed on say normal file like graphics driver etc?

did you restart router? and make sure no else is on network while you try to download?

should not be shaped as mweb have there own steam servers etc, i leave my settings default changed nothing, get full speed.

Hi toone7,

Steam is not shaped and if you have 2 PC's where the 1 is streaming and your PC is downloading from Steam at the same, it will affect your download speed.

Please click on link below or copy and paste into browser, it is about MWEB's plans too increase gaming experience on our Network:

I have re-authed your account & recreated your Telkom line, please power down your router for 10-15min and test.

Kind regards

Normal downloads are reaching 300-400KB/s. So thats fine. Streaming is also fine.

Thanks Mweb Ops. Yes i know that it will affect my download speed. (No one was using the internet when I did the Steam downloads, I just wanted to know if it would affect my latency while I was playing a game). It's really cool what you're doing about gaming!

I've turned off my router for 20minutes and put it on again and started my Steam downloads and it goes between 30 and 60KB/s :(

Hi tooone

Thank you for the feedback.

I will investigate further from my side and will provide you feedback once I receive information.

Hi again, I just rebooted my system and opened Steam and it seems better now! It's DL'ing at a constant 200KB/s. But someone else is also DL'ing on the network (although no-one was on the network before). So I don't know what caused the slow DL's.

Thanks again Mweb for responding and correcting the issue so fast! Really appreciate it! :D

Hi MWEB Guy,

(Apologies for just jumping into the thread)

Please can you tell me what actions you took to assist tooone?

I have the exact same problem - we have done the following:

Re-created port through Telkom
Changed Domains from dsl512two / dslmweb to just MWEB and they are all the same.

I also have a 4MB line and have gotten STEAM download speeds of 400+ kb/s but now don't even get 100kb/s.

The router is new ASUS D10 - Please help.

Hi hannohec

Send me your MWEB details so that I can have a look into this for you.
