Okay, well after three weeks of monitoring the situation I can vouch for the nntp.mweb.co.za being a damn near useless operation. Whilst I agree that news servers may be a thing of the past for some people, it isn't that way for everyone. Anyway, when the news server is functioning at all, I get EXACTLY the same speed off torrents as I do from the news server. This leads me to believe that NNTP and torrents are subject to the same shaping policies. Here's how it goes:

8AM-1PM --> +42 kB/s
1PM-2PM --> +56 kB/s
2PM-5PM --> +42 kB/s
5PM-7PM --> +56 kB/s
7PM-9PM --> +86 kB/s
9PM-11PM-> +100 Kb/s
11PM-6AM-> +230 Kb/s (sporadically more)
6AM-8AM --> +56 kB/s

So there you have it. I've decided that this is what i'm paying for, shaped P2P. No sense bleating on about it, so if It gets worse I'll have to make another plan. Right now though i'm chilled, I am barely coping with 250GB per month so I've got plenty to occupy myself with.

PS: I wouldn't say no to a Ubuntu repo on MWEB servers seeing as SAIX is now routing internationally.

It's the spirit of "Ubuntu".

Always a pleasure hambone, send it round. BTW they mirror lots of other stuff as well.

As a thank you, if you don't have a dropbox account please click my sig to get one.

I just signed up and made the move from WA, but it may have been for the worse.

It's not a great first impression when when you max out at 40kb/s on any protocol (even from a partner who's peered, mirror.ac.za). I've tried streaming, nntp, http but it's like I'm capped at this speed, possibly on the wrong profile (should be 4MBit).

Mweb told us that a long time back that newsgroups and torrents are both considered p2p

I'll give it a month before I make the move back :)

I'm currently downloading from mirror.ac.za over VPN and it seems fine; so probably just a malfunctioning QoS rule in place.

When I download from mirror.ac.za it goes close to full speed, there is definitely a problem if it doesn't. BTW I use a download manager.

Anyone has connection problem with news.mweb.co.za since Monday?

Again, can't seem to get stable speeds on torrents. One torrent has 5000 seeds but can't get over 30kbs.

Still. Not once did the torrent go over 150kbs, and when it did manage to go passed 80kbs, it was only for literally a minute or two.

Any advice MWeb Ops? I thought that shaping was decreased at about 1am.

Torrenting is useless. Literally. Nothing ever works via torrents. It's either you get it of a news server, or you get it in 4 weeks.

if you guys are using tpb dont expect torrents to fly, check the amount of leeches on a torrent, if there are more or the same amount of leeches than there are seeds you will have rubbish speeds even if a torrent has 5000 seeds, iv seen many people using public torrents unfairly blaming mweb for crap speed, i use private trackers mostly and get 300kbs+ late at night/early morning.

I'll give it a month before I make the move back :)

Careful now ... It's a calendar month notice period so can easily end up being TWO months.

On the plus side I switched to a new usenet provider (from Astraweb) and can now do 100 KBps (vs 20) which makes it kinda useful again. So looks like Astraweb is targetted for extra shaping. Still canceling ...
