@ Will and MWeb Guy

Eish! Downloaded this measly file (http://www.abscreensavers.com/random-photo-screensaver) - 28.8 on 4 meg line at 23:40 on a Friday night

Newserver - fluctuating between 30 and 40 KB/s

SpeedTest to Newlands: ping 18 - D3.31 Mbps and U .42Mbps
SpeedTest to London: ping 173 - D3.18 Mbps and U .35Mbps
SpeedTest to New York: ping 249 - D1.38 Mbps and U .38Mbps

Youtube 360P - no buffering
Youtube 720P - buffer, buffer, buffer every 10 seconds

[-]Tonight[/-] this morning I could not even play KZ3 without lag and subsequent kick off. It's a shame really, paying half a gran for substandard service!

Paid news servers using SSL use port 80 and they bypass the shaping cause those ports are not shaped. Aka if someone says something like SSL with Astraweb or newsdemon then its almost 100% that they using a port that bypasses the shaping.

So saying your getting full speeds on a paid server that has port 80 SSL is not something you should do here.

I dont use port 80 to get my ssl connections to astraweb...

We are allowed to use ssl to connect to news servers.. Mweb do shape these ports as well, therefore I am not breaking the rules. Just dont use port 80.. then you are breaking the rules.

Hmm I see mweb started shaping a little early this morning.. my average speeds are down from normal.

Can't say the same. Im trying to download ipad apps/games and am downloading at a whoooping 50kb/s

Hi Looney,

I changed a setting on your account. Please power down your router and test again.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

M-Web is actually quite clever at how they deal with their current network problems and user backlash. It's quite clear that they've oversubscribed since for at least the past month, even normal HTTP downloads from Microsoft or Apple max out at 80KB/s.

What they do is have a representative on this forum who asks for user details. This gives the appearance that they care or that "something is being done". Yet you see that same user, and many others, complaining weeks later about the same issue.

When you call the helpdesk, they are really friendly and eager to assist - they will reset your account, and tell you how to ask Telkom to recreate your port. But they know as well as we do that this achieves nothing. The issue is too little bandwidth being needed by too many users.

So... please don't ask for my details again, M-Web guy. I've given them to you. We've mailed back and forth, I've called the helpdesk and nothing ever gets fixed. So it's time for me to cut the flow of cash to you guys and redirect it somewhere else - it's the only way you (and most other conniving thieving South African businesses) will learn.

Looney, as a matter of interest, please post here telling us if your connection was magically suddenly getting speeds that match the ones you pay for? Let's call M-Web out, because to be honest, I doubt anything was done at all.

Tell us more - what setting did you change? How does it effect download speed?

It's simple:

Login into your MWEB 'My Account' and click 'disable' on the Circuit Redundancy Asymmetric Parsing tab, under 'Settings'.

Hi gregmcc,

I have taken off protected access on the account. What it does is, it opens up more ports to the connection but at the same time makes it vulnerable to hacking.
It's has helped with certain accounts, not all. It can always be turned on again

You can check if your Protected access is turned on by accessing myadsl.mweb.co.za and sign in with your MWEB email address & password.

Please make sure your firewall and anti-virus is up to date, when turned off.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

I am not sure why peeps are having such problems. My MWeb 4mbps uncapped account cruises. In fact, it screams!

It is not uncommon to see my download speeds clocking close on 500k/s. My line is 6mbps but MWeb account is 4mbps. It seems they allow a little give as I should not exceed around 420k/s.

I am in Edenvale if that helps anyone try figure why mine works so well.

But that only opens up a handful of "high-risk" ports surely? There are 65535 ports available, so how does opening up a few "special" protected ports improve the throughput?

I do not have protected access enabled and my speeds are still *****. Try another one.

Hi Donovan,

Like I mentioned in my above post "It has helped with certain accounts, not all." I was merely lending a measure of alternative support for gregmcc, as I picked up that Protected access is enabled on his account. It was not to say here is a fix.

As you are aware there has been many complaints regarding DL speed, I can only imagine the frustration you have been going through.

I can assure you, we are definitely investigating extensively to where the speed issue is rooting from and will keep everyone posted with any updates.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

It's in the script, so it must be true ;)

News server speeds are dead for me. Speedtest is solid, but news server downloads keep stalling and timing out. I've been busy with one 1.25 GB download since Monday and am currently on 441.9 MB.

I'm not convinced that it's worth the frustration at this point. :(

Why do you use the mweb server though when news bandwidth is so cheap?

How much do you pirate a month? 70 bucks must be within your range :D.

Is anyone else completely unable to view any videos from www.gametrailers.com? They all just sit there with the white loading circle and when you right click in the area flash says "No movie loaded".
