Thanks for the help Kimbo. Whilst I know that pinging telkoms website isn't the most scientific test, my line has pinged Telkomsa.net at 26-28ms for the last two years (it's my own private "Is there something wrong with my line" test)

Kimbo, do you have an IS based account? If so, when you log onto it next could you quickly do the same test again? I want to see if this is a line thing or an account thing.
Also, last but not least, where about in South Africa do you stay? I'm hoping Cape Town, as that could be responsible for the +20ms in your ping.

If you have such low usage of course there's no incentive (the incentive is being able to use more data and not worry about a cap, if this isn't a problem for you then the account is not suited to you) you could even get 10Gb for cheaper than the uncapped, rather go for that. I'm sure in the future you'll need more bandwidth and uncapped is the only way to go. But uncapped is going to have to be more heavily shaped to be feasible in SA.

I am using a Telkom account in Durbs and getting these results :

Am currently getting a file off news.mweb.co.za.
Speeds over the weekend were nothing short of brilliant, now shaping has pushed that down from 30+ to 5-6.
Though I can see their "smart shaper" at work, as I was typing my download went to 8 again.
I don't mind, but other people might
 
I started my own thread regarding my issues I'm having with their 'shaping' technology (or whatever you wanna call it)

I'm struggling to do the normal stuff - Google Earth takes forever to download images, YouTube battles (It's like watching it on a 56k connection) and downloads from SAIX's FTP comes in at 50KB/s and NewsServers (giganews) come down at 30KB/s.

Those are the tests I did at 7:30am ± this morning...

I agree with Gordon, something is not right! :mad:

But other than that (prior till today) I was very happy with the package.

Oh, I'm on a 4MB line.
 
Can someone please post the speeds they are getting on their lines during various times?

ie.

4Mb line
Rapidshare 430kb/s from around 7pm and weekends, 20-50kb/s during the day
News 350kb/s with 15 connections whole day
 
HTTP downloads fly at max speed most (if not all) of the time.
Astraweb 350-400kB/s throughout most of the weekend and evenings, 40-60 kB/s during the day.
4mb/s line.

Consistent with other user's experiences.

Arent the speed wrt newsservers "acceptable" for business hours? You wouldnt expect full line speeds during business hours for that.... And wouldnt the same go for FTP downloads and youtube? I don't use FTP and youtube that often, so can't comment on what the usual afterhours speeds are....

+1 agreed howerver geting 460 kb/s on news servers afterhours and weekends.
40-60 kb/s during the day.

Rapid share running @ 420 kb/s
Torrents (not that i use them) between 120 kb/s and 420 kb/s
Http downloads running @ 430 kb/s

The http downloads are ussually running @ fullspeed even in the day, shaper must be @ work today or DPI.

I really should get into WoW again.... Anyway, people knew this was a shaped service when they signed up so the speeds I'm getting on P2P (see torrents) are well withing what I expect them to be on a shaped service. As for youtube, I am able to stream just fine. So far, MWebs change of heart towards the consumer has been uplifting and liberating. I'm still impressed.
 
Just an update - line ran beautifully over the weekend (4mb mweb uncapped). Had the odd hiccup, probably twice as often as we have issues on Telkom, and about a 100th as often as we had issues on Sainet uncapped (which was R2k more!)

So I'm still amazingly happy :)
 
Getting great speeds on torrents at the moment, 430KB/s between 3. If I pause 2 of them my speed jumps to between 300-430KB/s on a single torrent during business hours :D
