I've had some real odd results from a 512k trial account (on a 4Mbps line).

Download: 0.56 Mb/s
Upload: 0.25 Mb/s

I've tried numerous torrents and they all seem to peak at about 33kb/s, rapidshare premium (http) downloads too, but my news server downloads almost max out at approx 405kb/s

Signed up yesterday for 384Kbps uncapped. Activation was quick. Speeds average between 22 and 28 KBytes/s. Found it strange that their call centre is not aware of the IP addresses of their DNS servers and their senior engineers refuse to tell them what the IP's are. Other then that - pleased thus far.

spoke to soon, http, torrents, nntp all seem to be 'capped/throttled' at 16kb/s for me.

I just signed up. Took about 5 seconds, and nothing to fax. So far I'm very impressed with browsing. It's super snappy compared to Afrihost.

Well your max speed is not determined by your line, but your lowest connection, which is MWEB, so those speeds are fantastic. How on earth did you get that speed from the news servers?

is the mweb uncapped shaped or semi-shaped ?

It is shaped 24/7 - however during off peak the shaping may fall away depending on usage of the entire network at that time. So while it may appear unshaped, it is always shaped.

I'm well aware that my max speed is determined by the actual account I'm using, limited to the capacity of my line :)

I'm guessing their profiles are messed up shifting 512k to 4096k as was previously a mistake when the trial launched. I was getting the 405kb/s speeds for about 2 hours this morning before everything went back to a 'cap' of 22kb/s. I've tried a whole bunch of protocols, speed tests but it definitely seems to be capped at this speed.

I've switched back to the WA promotional account for now, everything seems to be way too slow on the uncapped.

Those miserable shapers cottoned on then? Sorry if i appeared, um... arrogant; I was actually walking (typing) my way though how you got those speeds.

It has just gone dead again! FFS! Back onto my Telkom account

I've been downloading from rapidshare all day at max speed (420KB sec).
after last nights issues things came right. already done 14 GB since then.

have never touched P2P, and have no idea how a news server works.
tried using Grabit but i dont seem to establish a connection to it.

Rapidshare is the only thing i use, even though i have to pay extra, its simple.

Its not shaping, its intermittent problems on the MWeb network (not sure if local or international). There also seem to be long (10 min) delays in switching traffic from SAT-3 to SEACOM (and vice-versa).

Theoretically this switching process should be instantaneous, if the alternate routes were available at IP level. It seems that switching is not very fast (which makes it feel like somone is turning the lights on and off).

MWeb is the first ISP (AFAIK) that is trying to do this dynamic load balancing across 2 different fibres, and this process presumably has teething problems...
All of that sounds like something you made up.

For one, my traffic over my mweb account has been consistent bar for a short outtage last night. Other than that, the routes over both sat3/seacom that my traffic take has been consistent as well, meaning the intermittent problems you say they have is to do with something else, most probably on your side or your line on telkom's side.

As for switching between the two cables, I don't see why they need it while they use both at the same time, and more importantly they don't do layer2 over sat3 but instead seems to be using telkom's gold service.

I am not a fan when people make up their own stories and then spread it as the truth...

I doubt that very much. Pretty sure SAFE & SAT3 have been doing that for a while & failover too.

Last night SEACOM was having problems, and some traffic was being switched to SAT-3. I was doing tracert for 4 different sites in 2 continents, and there were absolutely no local problems on my line.

Just because you disagree, doesn't mean you can acuse me of being untruthful...

Only getting 15kb/s max from news.mweb.co.za on a cached item, anyone else experiencing these issues?

Gah, I think I should use Mweb at home and Afrihost at work rather than the other way round. Giganews is dead in the water on Afrihost.

Can any1 give me some feedback on what WoW latency is like on Mweb? I dont want to purchase 2 months only to find out its 600ms+! >.< Thanks in advance!
