could anyone that is:
  • on a 4MB line
  • using the Mweb 4MB Uncapped account,
  • downloading via news servers (such as GigaNews or Astraweb)

please post here what average speeds you're getting and at what time(s) during the day?

i was on the Axxess 4MB Uncapped (Shaped) and i was averaging around 6.8KB during the day :( ... i'm back on Express+ for now but would like to move over to Mweb if the speeds aren't too bad.

Since I signed up I've been averaging 150kB/s during the day and about 200-350kB/s during the night. I use the ssl-us.astraweb.com Port 443 with 10 connections (don't really need more than that).

Well thanks guys :)

Think I'll keep it and see how it goes for this month.. Then I'll decide closer to month end... Bad news is that I'll have to visit Sahara for a few 2TB babies :D

During the day, on 4mb Im getting uptoo 150KB/s download from astraweb. 20 connections.

I've got Mweb 4MB uncapped and Astraweb.

I'm at work during the day and download only in the evenings and at night.

In the evening (from 18:00) it is usually about 150-170 kbs and by the time I go to sleep (around 22:00) its closer to 200 kbs. By the time I wake up (05:00) its going on full blast 400-420 kbs

Thanks for the feedback!! :)

Those speeds are not bad. I think I will try it for a month during May.

i also use my line for online gaming so i'm hoping the pings aren't too high for that. I could always use my Telkom account for that though.

The MWeb ping times have been quite stable for the last week (apart from initial teething problems, and minor glitches).

The latency for MWeb users outside Jhb is a bit higher than SAIX (~30ms), due to the network configuration (all traffic goes via Jhb first as the first hop).

i normally get around 49ms ping on www.speedtest.net to the Cape Town SAIX server and around 30ms to the Pretoria Vodacom server.

How about international pings? Anybody want to run a speed test to a location in New York, UK and China? :P

Here's my experience on 512k uncapped offering:

Average throughput is +- half the line speed taken across the entire day.

ppp2 / daily

day rx | tx | total | avg. rate
------------------------+-------------+-------------+---------------
04/05/10 2.21 GiB | 561.2 MiB | 2.76 GiB | 267.49 kbit/s
04/06/10 1.18 GiB | 1.05 GiB | 2.23 GiB | 216.85 kbit/s
04/07/10 1.27 GiB | 1.35 GiB | 2.62 GiB | 254.58 kbit/s
------------------------+-------------+-------------+---------------

and RX/TX from 12 this afternoon at "full-throttle"

h rx (KiB) tx (KiB)
12 45900 45281
13 53922 48436
14 52473 50609
15 48673 44653
16 42854 45784
17 41315 40461
18 36424 70606

I am not personally seeing any major afterhours improvement at all as above, a "true" uncapped solution would give me a daily theoretical limit of 4.7gb.

Also the shaping seems to be very symmetrical (as of 6th) if you notice the TX and RX. I suspect they are not shaping the upstream to save some load on the shapers. On the 5th and before (dont have the stats anymore) I received 2.21gb and only sent 561mb. Is anybody else experiencing this?

can anyone tell me if i can see how and where i can see how much i download per day?

On 4MB mweb. Service has been great till the last couple of days and today i noticed some severe shaping on torrents. I tried a couple of different "healthy" torrents and am getting speeds between 45-60KB/s.. This is down from the acceptable daytime speeds i used to experience which were around 120-160KB/s.

Can't notice too much on browsing but youtube has also taken a hit.

I'm not sure if this is an isolated incident for me because of high usage (i'm pretty sure there are people with higher). I will report back on my night time speeds later on.
In any case it's still miles better than the IS Uncapped Express I was on.

EDIT: adding more torrents to download at once still ends up with an overall throughput of between 45-60

EDIT2: now it just jumped to 160KB/s - I assume they flicked the afterhours switch

I think the more people they are signing up the slower it's getting, here are my stats for today:

This is concerning :/

Oooooh, what have we here? Degrading speeds on the MWeb service. People who have it I apologise as all I was hoping for was excellent speeds but I had a number of heated discussions with people who were dissing Afrihost's terms and conditions and bragging about MWeb not doing any throttling. I mentioned on numerous occasions that we were better off waiting and seeing as their terms did allow for it.

I do hope these slow speeds are just temporary...

You really do have you knife out for Mweb. All you opinions with regard to Mweb is anti Mweb. Nothing wrong. You are in titled to your opinion. Most people not saying its the fastest uncapped. most people are saying its faster than Afrihost. Which I intend to agree with.

Funny how criticism, well actually not even criticism but more a matter of initially stating wait and see, is regarded as having the knives out. My initial comments were brought up on the Afrihost thread, yes, the Afrihost thread, where Mweb subscribers were gleefully bragging about the exceptional speeds they were getting and giving Afrihost a kick on the way out. I took the time to read the Mweb terms and conditions and pointed out that they left room for Mweb to impose the same throttling and fair use terms that Afrihost had been fairly upfront about. I was told then that I just had an issue with Mweb and that they were the greatest and they would never stoop as low as Afrihost.... I am now seeing all this talk of these slow speeds.

I am on the lookout for a good uncapped service myself. I have just moved and as a result am going to relook at my ISP set up (I currently use four ISPs to give me what I want at the best price). I am not out to get anyone. This is more a matter of my initial trepidation at Mweb's apparent greatness being justified.

Speeds have been exceptional other than torrents, Rapidshare and news servers.. And even then, on a 4mb line it's fluctuates between 60kbps-440kbps, obviously 60kbps being the worst and 440kbps the best although it appears Rapidshare is being throttled 24/7 to a maximum of around 300kbps. File downloads from filehippo, megaupload, hotlinks etc etc all running at max speeds 24/7... Youtube streaming 100%, email and general browsing 100%. I must say, very happy with the 4mb offering...

I would be happy with an uncapped service if it offered me reasonable access to the news servers after 6pm and before 7 am weekdays and all weekend... If this was not available I would not have much need for uncapped.
