Same on torrents - after 12 things get good ;)

I am interested in why some people get poor performance on Mweb but great performance from other ISPs? This is (apparently) on all protocols and at all hours of the day. Any theories?

round robin.

hmm I wonder, I think it has more to do with the amount of traffic running through your nearest CINX / JINX thingy. I often compare my DL speeds with the amount of bandwidth running through CINX at the same time, and the results are more or less consistent. CINX traffic goes up, MWEB shaped traffic speed goes down. So I am thinking it is all about the network capacity, and giving priority to normal browsing during those high volume periods...hmm wait, is that not what MWEB said they do? Oh right it is, silly me. lol

Why people get slow speed over all protocols I don't know. I have only once experienced a slowdown on Youtube / HTTP, so I do not perceive it to be a problem (for me). NNTP is shaped as the account description promised, so that's all working according to plan. Only thing I can think of is some form of bottle neck on the MWEB network in some areas, provided that the Telkom network can be ruled out.

OK, sometimes I get that my connection is very slow and I just switch the router off and on. Sometimes it even shows that there is no DSL on my line and then a switch off/on works too. But in your case it sounds like this is only with Mweb and no other ISP. Could this be something on the ATM link to Mweb or what?

Probably throttling, yes I know MWEB claim not to throttle, but when I start a torrent, newsgroup download, HTTP download, it goes right into the 300KB/s for a couple of seconds, say 5 - then drops down to a constant low level.

If I wasn't using the MWEB newsgroup as well as the Astraweb one - I'd be getting below 10KB/s from Astraweb. As soon as my subscriptions up - I'm going to choose a lessor known one - I've tried there two week trial, and its damn fast in comparison.

What download manager do you use for HTTP? I also see that when I download with IE or FF it starts at 300kb/s and then goes down to 100kb/s while Opera climbs from 0kb/s to 100kb/s. If I use something like FDM on a big HTTP file it will max to 430kb/s if I have 5+ segments downloading the file.

Although that is probably noob stuff you already know and dealt with. Which brings me to the point of why would they limit your speed, but not mine? Technically we have the same line speed and same account... This mystery is bugging me (NNTP pet hate aside ;) ).

I also don't understand the constant complaining. If I use any SP and the service is k4k, I change it until I find a good SP. Its that simple.

Anyone signed up for the Afrihost 50G special? am thinking of dropping MWEB Uncapped to Afrihost 50G Capped which is round about the same price. Seems to me i will never able to enjoy the Uncapped as i will hardly reach even a 50G on torrents

Oh yeah I see it's closed on the MWEB site. I wish I knew what was causing all these slow speeds at the moment. Sigh...

Hi Dames

Please advise if you are still encountering slow speeds and if you require any assistance from me.

Regards,
MWEB Guy
