Mweb home: sub 1Kb/s
Mweb business: acceptable

Thank you dual accounts

International down...Afrihost running fine ;-)

Why is it necessary for us to have backup accounts? This is unacceptable...

First day of switching our small office from Web Africa to an MWEB Uncapped 1mb line... Mweb hasn't made a good first impression with my boss :)

Does this kind of thing happen a lot? An extra backup account seems a bit much..

A bit much? I disagree - businesses need to be redundant. One could say that having a UPS, multiple data/file copies, etc. also seems a bit much...

Buy a GB of prepaid bandwidth for redundancy? FNB Connect is about R25 a gig. I use them because it's easy having a FNB account.

It does suck but it doesn't happen that often. However, when it does happen international connectivity is almost non-existent. Thus, having a backup is a good idea, especially if you work from home like I am doing today.

Almost daily... start at page 1 of this thread and you'll get the picture... if its not throttled to a standstill, then its dead or dying on mweb's bandwidth carriers... sorry for the grim picture, but it is the truth none the less...

Considering the users in this thread make up maybe <5% of MWEB's user base, perhaps you should change providers (if not already).

Or maybe it's because I'm in Cape Town...

I did comparative tests between MWeb and Africahost. Afrihost at least double as fast as MWeb, and this is to their (Mweb's) own speedtest servers!

Using MWeb :

Mweb Speedtest - London
Download Speed: 1619 kbps (202.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 238 kbps (29.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 409 ms
Jitter: 192 ms

MWeb Speedtest - Cape Town
Download Speed: 3474 kbps (434.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 380 kbps (47.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: -1 ms

SpeedTest.net
2.42Mb/s http://www.speedtest.net/result/1434948782.png

AVG - 150KBs (Top speed 170)

Afrihost

MWeb SpeedTest London
Download Speed: 3475 kbps (434.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 401 kbps (50.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 368 ms
Jitter: 30 ms

Mweb SpeedTest CapeTown
Download Speed: 3364 kbps (420.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 423 kbps (52.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: -1 ms

SpeedTest.net
3.42Mb/s http://www.speedtest.net/result/1434953859.png

AVG - 390KB (Top Speed 440)

I have, ending at the end of the month... can't wait... my frustration with mweb has been ongoing for a while. I need a service that performed like a 4meg, not like 9600baud! I'm home in the evenings, and when I want to surf, buy music for work purposes, I don't have time to sit and wait for things to buffer, or not play at all. This is not what I'm paying for despite the fact that I do torrents as well, and even tho the torrents are not going much faster than 20 - 100kbs, I have to stop them of late just to do my work. I don't mind the torrents going slow at times, but when i have to stop them just to get something done... is just not good enough!!!

Your point?
As soon as I complain about these daily speed dips, Mweb tells me to do a speed comparison. I spend time doing it, and then I am told my connection has "stabilised" so there is nothing to look into. So now I did the speed tests pre-emptively.

I see... I thought that would've been between you and the MWEB rep assisting you.

Tell me, what kind of Afrihost account is that? I have a feeling it's not uncapped. It's difficult to compare an entry level MWEB uncapped account to a normal capped account, which will mostly give full speed.

We have been informed that SEACOM have fixed the fibre break and your connectivity should therefore return to normal in the next 10 minutes as we move you over from SAT-3 back onto SEACOM again. Thanks very much for your support and patience during this time.

That's a good point I guess, I suppose I haven't had this experience before but it makes sense to have that backup. Although many posts in this thread suggest daily outages for some users, I'm guessing the vast majority of MWEB subscribers don't have that problem.

That's my understanding too.

By the way, when you get that prepaid gig, make sure you get data rollover so it remains active after the month/30 days. WebAfrica have this service.
