If you need mission-critical service, pay for the business/gaming/premium product at a premium price. If you want a usable service at an affordable price, pay for the consumer-grade product. ADSL is a best-effort service without guarantees. A higher-priced product offers a better "best-effort" than a lower-priced product.

Unfortunately, the present offering seems to be a "zero effort" product. I don't think weeks of downtime per year qualifies as any kind of effort.

I think one has to own up to the fact that any best effort service is a failure when it gets to the point of extended downtime on this scale.

MWEB has similar experiences with SEACON (not a typo) earlier this year. A best effort service would have learned from the previous outage to make contingency plans for the next one ...

Oh, "but they did", you say. My response to that would be that if that was the case there wouldn't be hundreds of disgruntled MWEB customers complaining in this thread alone.

The bottom line is a contingency plan also has to be a best effort, and in this case it's falling way short of the mark. Come Monday when business starts up it will probably get a lot worse.

Sorry, but this is not a "best effort". At best it's a "minimum effort".

The backup bandwidth is in use. I can surf local and international sites and download as I need on my uncapped account. P2P will no doubt be shaped more heavily for a few days, but that's about all. As soon as SEACOM is operating again, P2P will pick up again. That's about the only impact. They have contingency plans and they are in operation. I'm not sure what the problem is. If you want your torrents to run flat out, get the unshaped product.

Does MWEB pay to talk #$%^?
I am not complaining about torrents. I could care less about them. This morning I had a reasonable service, slow but everything was functioning. This afternoon I do not. Nothing has changed other than Mweb have activated another protocol to throttle use to fit how much bandwidth they have left. I have nothing against you personally but when you preach $%^& and then try and shovel it down our throats as the voice of enlightened reason I want to puke.
Obviously you do not have a problem, so spare us. We do not want to hear how you are so happy with the service when no-one else is. What I would like is for someone from Mweb who has a degree of integrity to tell us exactly what they are throttling. Honestly I can browse faster on my blackberry.
A company that takes two days to acknowledge there is a problem in the first place.... Read back a few posts, especially the one where MWEBGUY tells us the problem is sorted :wtf:
Then maybe you will understand why we are all not so happy.
Rant over, enjoy your double priced connection. Let’s see how long they can keep you happy

+1

Most of the people raging here, talk about how crap MWEB has been so ****ty, and they've had to endure this for ages, etc, etc.

What I don't understand is why you guys stay with someone you are so unhappy with.

Have to agree with SHVAK. This was never about torrents. This is about a commercial service that persistently fails and falls very far short of a "best effort" attempt.

Who would've thought a cable we waited so long to land here would give us consumers so much problems? Im just glad we're still in the position to go online and do the basic stuff like surfing and receive emails. Guess my downloads will have to wait a while longer.

No use throwing rocks at a glass house, it aint gonna make the process go any faster. Streaming videos now and it seems to be working just fine so im happy :)

About 2 hours ago I was able to download at full speed again (104kbs). Now I'm back to 7kbs :(

Browsing is a bit faster not much, but on the up side (maybe the only one) my Ogame problem has been sorted out I dont get connection reset anymore...

cant even browse. not even google open. i must refresh it several times before it loads.... i can download at 40kbps. this is really driving me nuts!

I can browse internet, although takes like 10min to download 1 wallpaper. My downloads like filesonic, megaupload, rapidshare or whatever doesn't want to work at all. Then also, my work's https connections isn't working which is extremely frustrating trying to finish up before bed.

Does anyone know what could have happened in the last about 2 days?
Wouldn't a down line disable all international trtaffic, and my work's local still be working?

Only google opens for me now. Downloads have been down for forever, and browsing has seems a little dodgy. I've resorted to my backup WA account.
